Outside the Albuquerque Marriott, 2101 Louisiana Blvd. N.E., where the convention is being held about 25 protesters stood across the street, holding signs that said "Shame on You" and "Support our Troops, End the War." Others asked that Cheney be impeached.
Scores of Albuquerque police and Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies on foot and on horseback lined the streets around the entrance.
Protesters said they were unhappy after being asked to move from Louisiana Boulevard to a side street that was mostly closed to traffic.
"I think Cheney is a war criminal, a mass murderer, insane, and he needs to be impeached," said Tom Powell, a 56-year-old sculptor and community activist.
Powell wasn't with any group, but other sign holders were from the Iraq Summer Campaign, a coalition of groups working to end the war in Iraq by convincing 40 members of Congress to change their minds.
