USA TODAY's Susan Page reports that President Bush is making some headway in arguing that the increase in U.S. troops in Iraq is showing military progress.

In the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, taken Friday through Sunday, the proportion of those who said the additional troops are "making the situation better" rose to 31% from 22% a month ago. Those who said it was "not making much difference" dropped to 41% from 51%.

About the same number said it was making things worse: 24% now, 25% a month ago.

The number of those who favor removing virtually all U.S. troops from Iraq by next April 1 has dropped a bit, though two-thirds of those surveyed still support the idea.

In the July survey, a record high of 62% had called the invasion of Iraq "a mistake." That view is now held by 57%, roughly where it's been for more than a year.

The U.S. military tells CBSNews.com that 26 American service members have been killed in action in Iraq in the past week alone, including three soldiers who were killed by a single roadside bomb attack reported Tuesday.

Most recently reported were the three Task Force Marne soldiers killed Saturday when a roadside bomb struck their convoy south of Baghdad, according to a brief statement that provided no more details.

One Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier was killed and another wounded Monday when their vehicle was targeted by an armor-piercing explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, in a western section of the capital, the military said separately.

Lt. Col. Rudy Burwell, a military spokesman based at Camp Victory in Baghdad, told CBSNews.com that a total of six troops were killed in action Monday.

3. Thanks for putting these 2 together
Headline might as well read, "Public Still Falls for this Shit." Public doesn't know that 26 soldiers died this week or that the people in Baghdad are living in 100+ temps without reliable water and electricity.

4. Our Local news (BELO) said last week, "THE SURGE IN IRAQ IS WORKING!"
I think the new mind control and Rove talking points are being spouted from our local news stations. Watch your local news broadcasts. There is CONSTANT right-wing spin, and they are now trying to convince the public that the Iraq is improving.

Local news is a battlefront, and no one is paying attention.

9. Well, if you pour a bunch more troops into any given area, things there
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 01:16 PM by wienerdoggie
will probably improve while the troops are there. That's just common sense. I don't think it's spin to say that the military operations are showing sign of progress--put a bunch of soldiers on every street corner, raid houses, kill insurgents, etc.--it will have an impact on the security situation. But it still doesn't change the big picture, which is this: We can't keep the escalation, at current numbers, going indefinitely--it has an expiration date already on it, as even the military leadership admits. THEN what happens? Will it all fall apart? Are modest military/security gains in select areas worth the cost in blood and money, and worth prolonging the inevitable day when those streets are handed back to Iraqis? Do we start ending the hemorrhaging of our troops' blood, our military readiness, and our money now, or later? The politician or candidate who can address this (when the "surge" of Petraeus good-news propaganda overwhelms us in September) without politcizing the issue or scaring the American people will end up being my hero.
