If you missed John Pilger on DemocracyNow! this morning,
here is a link to the transcript. This program is usually aired 3X a day, so you should have an opportunity to watch this speech by one of the most important living media critics and documentarians of our time.

(Caution: He is very tough on the left, on liberals and on small d democrats. But, his argument is worth hearing and evaluating. )

When Rupert Murdoch won his bid to take over Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal last week, the Australian media baron brought one of America's oldest, most respected and widely-circulated newspapers into his vast media empire. Murdoch's News Corp media conglomerate owns more than 175 other newspapers as well as the Fox Television network, 21st Century Fox film studios, several satellite networks, MySpace.com, HarperCollins, and much more.

Besides amassing a media empire, Murdoch has repeatedly been accused of using his media holdings to advance his political agenda. In 2003, all of Murdoch's 175 newspapers supported the Iraq invasion. He spoke to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the lead-up to the invasion, some in Blair's inner circle even called him “the 24th member of the Cabinet.”

After the announcement of the five billion dollar sale, Murdoch told the New York Times that in order for the Wall Street Journal to remain editorially independent it needed to make healthy profits. Murdoch said "The first road to freedom, is viability."

Well one of Rupert Murdoch's fellow countrymen, an Australian who also resides in Britain, strongly disagrees. John Pilger - the eminent investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker - is a harsh critic of the corporate media. Pilger began his career in journalism close to half a century ago. He has made over 50 documentaries and is the author of numerous books, his most recent is titled "Freedom Next Time: Resisting the Empire."

27. "War on Democracy" is being distributed by Lionsgate in UK & US...
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 03:11 PM by IndyOp
The ITV network will show the film following its cinema debut. I am guessing that it will show in NY and SF in the U.S. and then most of us will have to catch it online.

Actually, I'm rather amazed you would even own up to this degree of lack of knowledge.

9. You'll find some of them here
http://www.thedossier.ukonline.co.uk/video.htm

Just about everything on that site has been on UK TV, mainly on Channel4 , at some time or other and occasionally gets repeated too - some of it on Murdoch's Sky believe it or not. Yes he's a donut but the UK TV industry is competetive and he's not stupid enough to not make money when he can.

TYhe film you mentioned is newly released and that's why it's not up yet to just watch on google video whatever or even the site mentioned above.

So - make some coffee and sit yourself down for a week or so to watch all those videos...........lol.

There's a list of most of his documentaries on wikipikiwhatever : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pilger

There's a US site which has most of this stuff too but if I mention it by name this might get deleted - did last time when I posted the link to the whole of Sir, No Sir.

11. His latest doesn't seem to be available yet in the US.
Not being distributed (what a surprise) and not on DVD yet.

Given the context of our overheated debate on illegal immigration from Latin America, I can't think of a more needy audience.

Thank you, Edward.

And, of course, my favorite, the "Fuck Bush Bench," recently repainted after some do-gooder tried to cover it up. Except for a couple of weeks this has stood since last fall. (By the way, Agent Mike, I'm NOT responsible for this.)

12. Found them in London
I found his books when I was in London for work. As I had already bought a couple other books, I bought only one. Then online from HWSmith, I bought a couple more. Though I've been informed that books available in the UK can be had through Canadian vendors. Supposed to be cheaper, too.

16. My favorite piece from the interview....
...

Ironically, I began to understand how censorship worked in so-called free societies when I reported from totalitarian societies. During the 1970s I filmed secretly in Czechoslovakia, then a Stalinist dictatorship. I interviewed members of the dissident group Charter 77, including the novelist Zdener Urbanek, and this is what he told me. "In dictatorships we are more fortunate that you in the West in one respect. We believe nothing of what we read in the newspapers and nothing of what we watch on television, because we know its propaganda and lies. Unlike you in the West. We've learned to look behind the propaganda and to read between the lines, and unlike you, we know that the real truth is always subversive."

Vandana Shiva has called this subjugated knowledge. The great Irish muckraker Claud Cockburn got it right when he wrote, "Never believe anything until it's officially denied."

"There is no "war on terrorism". If there was, the SAS would be storming the beaches of Florida, where more terrorists, tyrants and torturers are given refuge than anywhere in the world....."

33. I heard it on the radio.
for those who don't get Democracy Now! in their cities, they can listen to it on the radio via iTunes (I can't say about PCs.) If you go to their site you can find a list of stations and look for them under "public" on iTunes radio. Luckily we get it here, but I'm at work when it's on, but lots of times I can listen to it while working.

only five more recommends needed to put this up for a while. the speech is worth it.

thanks for posting the link.
