Mistaken Identity: Woman jailed for nine days

Ocala, Florida- A 22-year-old year old Ocala woman says her faith in the justice system is shaken forever.

Amy Sellers spent nine days in jail for a warrant that wasn’t even hers. The Marion County Sheriff’s office arrested Sellers on a warrant for another Amy Sellers. The other Amy is 6 years older.

The wrongly arrested Amy says she didn’t even get to see a judge during her stay in jail. Her boyfriend took three days off of work trying to prove to the sheriff’s office that they had the wrong Amy.

After 8 days, the sheriff’s office realized they had made a clerical error. But, they still waited one more day to release her.

2. I hope she sues them for a hell of a lot of money!
How the hell can they lock someone up like that and not bother to put her in front of a judge?

And then, once they finally admit they have the wrong person, they kept her for another full day? For what reason? Spite for being the wrong person?

3. Just gotta love the Florida legal system
I sure hope she takes them to the cleaners. Everything in Florida is like that.

Love your user name. I used to live in Jupiter and have been a long time Randi Fan. I see you are in Lake Worth.

6. It's frightening
Especially to someone who has never been to jail. I couldn't imagine what that is like. :(

Yeah, I started listening to Randi around the time of the OJ trial. She would have some heated debates with Jack Cole and it ended up making her an overnight celebrity. Every other talk show was talking about Randi. I miss the old local shows and I don't hear Robert Wexler on the show anymore but I am so proud of what she has done :)

11. I am real proud of her too
But I do miss the local show.

I remember the debates with Jack Cole during the OJ Trial. That was when she was on from 12-3 and Jack from 3-7 and they would overlap during the 3-4 hour talking about the trial.

I've been listening to Randi since I moved to Florida from NY. At that time she was on WSHE as a disc jockey. She's only Rock and Roll was her catch phrase. Then she went to WIOD with Neil Rogers and that was a blast too.

When she was with WSHE she used to have Rock Stars in the Studio and she would interview them. One day she had Motley Crue there and she was giving away front row seats. I was the 10th caller and she asked why I wanted to see them. I told her that I loved Motley Crue and had seen them at MSG and would love to see them again. Then she asked how old I was? I told her 32, at that time and she told me I was too old to go see them. She is only 1 year younger than me. Years later when she was at WJNO, she had Foreigner in the studio and it was a great interview. Later when she was taking calls, I called her and reminded her of the day she wouldn't let me go to the concert of Motley Crue years before. She had remembered the whole story and told me that she did me a favor because the girls that MC had were gorgeous and that I would have felt inferior. We shared some good laughs and for the rest of that day she played Motley Crue songs. She left with the band for a month after that concert when she was WSHE and no one knew what happened to her. She is a riot. But I do miss her being local. I used to call in with news about Bush and Afghanistan, I was Jeanette in Jupiter at that time. She used to have some great chronic callers that I missed to this day. I wonder what happen to some of them?

13. WSHE!!
That was a great station. Everyone had that white WSHE sticker on their car back in the days. I was too young to remember Randi or any of the other DJs, but I did hear that show with Foreigner and I remember your call!! :) I thought it was kind of strange that she had a band in the studio and then she started telling her stories from WSHE. That was a fun show.

I found Neil by accident. I was looking for a sports station that was covering the Panthers during their Stanley Cup run and a friend told me he heard an old guy talking about the Panthers on 610am and that was the end of that. I was hooked. I wasn't aware of Randi's ties to Neil or Phil Hendrie. It all fell into place perfectly.

I think I hear some of Randi's old callers on 1340 WPBR. They have a pretty good morning show with Joe Martin and Joe Irwin 8-9am: http://www.talk1340wpbram.com/portal/
It's a tiny local station that has the same 5 or 6 callers everyday.. and they have Dick Farrell at 9am (just a warning in case you have a radio accident);)

15. I can't believe you remember my call
That was a real fun day. It was about a year after "9-11" and no one had laughed in a long time. That day everyone let their hair down and just laughed and laughed and rocked and rolled. She had me on for two segments and then went on about her remembering her days in Rock and Roll. And then it was Motley Crue for the rest of the show. What a blast.

I remember the bumper sticker. Oh yeah, we all had it on our cars.

Thanks for the link for the morning show in the area. I am now up in North Florida. I will listen. I used to love Hy from Margate. He predicted everything that is happening now. And Greg from somewhere, that would always argue the rights point of view. Randi would eat him up and spit him out.

Very cool, my new friend.

20. You have to hold the record
of the longest call to Randi's show. I am a Crue fan since 6th grade. That is when Theater of Pain was released. I have my older sister to thank for that :)So your call was definitely a memorable one.

Hope you get a chance to hear Joe and Joe. It would be great to hear a few new callers too. :)

4. I really, really, hope this is not a sign of things to come.
This kind of thing should never happen. It's scary to think it actually happened.

It's transphobic and against DU rules.

9. This happened to me for 3 days
Several years ago I was working in Downtown Phx, AZ and was held up at gun point. The robber took my wallet, ID, etc. Several months later, I was pulled over by several police cars. I was cuffed, my car searched and I was told that I had a "Class 3 Felony" warrant out for my arrest. Nothing more. I spent that night being moved from local jail to local jail until I reached the downtown circuit. They call it the Horse Shoe as you are placed is a series of cells with other detainees and moved in a semi-circular fashion. The final stop is in front of the judge. The judge told me that I had been accused of driving in a stolen car, possessing illegal firearms - and a couple of others I don't remember - and since my "last arraignment" I had not appeared back in court at the designated time/date, violated my bail bond and would be spending the next 14 days in County Jail w/o bail.... until my next hearing. I asked the judge if I could please say something in my defense to which he agreed. I attempted to explain to him that this was a case of mistaken identity and that if he would please just reference my fresh mug shot or fingerprints against the photo/prints with my previous file that it would become clear. He asked if I was finished, I said yes, he sent me to jail. I spent the next 2 days in county jail until a contact of my parents', who happens to be a homicide detective in town, did my mother a favor and researched the situation. I was released finally with no apologies. The state did reimburse my car impound fees however. I spent the next year or so clearing my credit (at my expense) from this same person's manipulation of the system and theft of my ID. Just last year (6+ years later) I got a visit at midnight from about 20 armed officers at my home in Scottsdale. I was then notified that when I had traded in a golf club for a new one at the local golf shop, it is considered a pawn. The police review all names and pawn transactions. Apparently I still come up as an alias for this obviously very bad person still on the loose. Hence the convergence of cops that evening. There is no point to my story other than this happens and I believe that it is going to happen a lot more given the unchecked power and authority now given to our government.

10. Wow, that is rough!
I can't imagine how frustrating and demoralizing that must have been. I don't understand how they can get away with that! And this is part of the same system that's going to keep us safe from terrorism!

Welcome to DU! :hi:

14. This sort of thing happens way more often than people realize..
A similar situation happened to a member of my family, except in their case they were deputized to drive a car full of minors to the police station and then charged with a crime upon arrival at the station.

We were told we had an excellent case against the county but we couldn't afford to move elsewhere while pursuing the case and decide not to follow up since we were afraid of being set up by the cops in a reprisal.

We did manage to get the charges dropped and the record supposedly expunged. But several years later my family member went to get a gun license and was denied due to having a "drug charge" on her record, something that was a total and complete fabrication.

Thankfully by that time we knew someone in the sheriffs office who managed to get the whole thing straightened out but if that had not been the case my family member would have a permanent record for something she had never even been accused of doing.
