Ex-state senator pleads guilty to federal charges

HUNTINGTON -- A former West Virginia state senator pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal mail and tax fraud charges.
Lisa Smith admitted that she failed to pay the Internal Revenue Service more than $86,000 withheld for taxes from her employees' wages in 2002. The Putnam County Republican ran in-home health care companies, among other businesses.

Smith also said she mailed a false campaign finance statement to state election officials while running for her Senate seat in 2002.

According to the plea agreement, Lisa Smith and her husband, Mark Smith, have owned and run two home health-care companies, Elite Professional Health Associates Inc. and Elite Health Care Inc., in Putnam County since 1990.

Although they correctly reported the taxes they withheld from their employees’ wages, they failed to turn most of that money over to the Internal Revenue Service on at least two occasions, according to the plea agreement.

Lisa Smith’s plea acknowledged the failure to pay more than $86,000 in taxes for the third quarter of 2002, while Mark Smith accepted responsibility for the failure to pay almost $62,000 for the same period in 2004.

Prosecutors maintain that the couple siphoned more than $79,000 in 2002 and $200,000 in 2004 into their personal bank accounts in order to pay for personal loans owed by Lisa Smith. MORE...

Putnam county is an area of the state where poverty is fairly uncommon and this lady fooled all the rich and famous pubs(suckers)in the area, big-time. There's a big trial going on in that county now in which a hospital is in big twouble, because one of their main ace in the hole doctors, who had done over a hundred operations in his relatively short tenure there, wasn't even a real doctor after all. The guy operated on people for the wrong things and everything else. They tracked him down in another state using a different name and operating on people there.

George Bush might very well end up being a republican brain surgeon, in an unsuspecting Putnam county, if he becomes unemployed soon.
