7-Year Old Battles Gunman

REIDSVILLE, N.C. -- An armed robber was no match for a 7-year-old girl in Reidsville, North Carolina.

The gunman tried to hold-up the convenience store where little Alisha’s mom was working. (She didn’t want to reveal her last name.)

Alisha rushed to her mom’s defense when the robber pushed her. Alisha shoved him right back.

“I was pushing on him and telling him to ‘back away, back away man.’

“I didn't want him to hurt mommy.”

be advocating responding to violence with more violence? Is that what we should teach our children? Doesn't this put them in harm's way? Shouldn't we be advocating responding to violence by examples of peace? While we all admire the young girl for trying to protect her mom, she could easily have been injured. And if she grows up thinking that responding to violence with violence, isn't that what Bush did after 9/11? Is this the right example? Isn't "passive resistance" a better model? Wouldn't taht serve us all as adults and as a nation better?

One can be peaceful and still not live life as a victim. The more PEACEFUL people who step up against bullies and violent criminals, the less of the latter there will be.

If one wants peace, one works for justice, not the propagation of door mats.

I don't like the kid being in harms way but I find it ludicrous that you would compare her behavior to the criminal's behavior.

...and all except PURE pacifists recognize the right to self defend. What I mean by "PURE" comes from the days of Joan Baez. She called herself a pacifist and so of course all the right wing media would come up with inane crap and say, "well then, if someone was hurting your child, you wouldn't fight back?" She amended what she called herself from pacifist to non-violent because of course she would protect her child. A pure pacifist will allow themselves and others to be killed and will NOT fight back under any circumstances. I find that IMMORAL. Under certain circumstances we are OBLIGATED to fight back. If we do not protect those who cannot protect themselves we are not only not moral we are unnatural.

This child was doing what comes naturally. Pushing was hardly violence. She was just defending her mom.
