Budget Stall Could Delay New Death Chamber
California's budget impasse could delay future lethal injections in California. State corrections officials say the budget stalemate is stalling construction on a new death chamber, a facility they say is needed before the state can resume capital punishment.
"The budget stalemate is in a very real way impacting our ability to carry out the will of the people and implement capitol punishment," said Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson Seth Unger.
California started building a new death chamber at San Quentin Prison earlier this year after a judge ordered the state to revamp its capital punishment process. But construction started without legislative approval and was halted when the project ran over-budget.
