Bush's Executive Order on Lebanon Even Worse than the One on Iraq
http://www.progressive.org/mag_wx080307

George W. Bush is churning out executive orders and Presidential directives just as fast as Dick Cheney’s lawyers can fill up yellow legal pads.

The power that he is asserting—no, grabbing—with these executive orders is astonishing and alarming. Such power imperils our liberties and our democratic system of government.

Two weeks ago, Bush issued an extraordinary executive order entitled, “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq.”

It gives to the Secretary of the Treasury the authority to freeze the property of people who are engaging in violence or who “pose a significant risk” of engaging in violence against the Iraqi government or the economic and reconstruction plan for Iraq.

It also bans donations of “food, clothing, and medicine, intended to be used to relieve human suffering” to anyone whose property has been frozen.

On August 1, Bush issued a similar executive order, this one entitled, “Blocking Property of Persons Undermining the Sovereignty of Lebanon or Its Democratic Processes and Institutions.”

2. And the Democrats in Congress can't be bothered to stop him
Sorry, but I fail to see how motions to censure -- which will surprise me nigh unto death if they even make it out of committee, much less pass -- will do anything other than be a collective sigh of dismay.

Wake me up when we have enough people in Congress who give a damn to make a difference.

4. It will never happen
You might as well just go to sleep forever.

The only solution is to stand up to this mess and make noise. It's going to require pissing a lot of people off and using alternative methods, some beyond what is considered legal, but all within what is ethically responsible.

Something has to be done, and we need to figure out what very soon.

3. This is what we should be concerned about
It only gets worse from here. I remember bringing this up a few days ago. Each one of these orders is going to go further than the last one because they know that no one is really standing up to them. They have almost complete control of the government, or will as soon as the terrorist attacks happen, just like the Patriot Act a few years ago. They are rushing these orders through, behind our backs, as we are on vacation or fixated on seemingly more important issues. Congress was briefed on something, as evidenced by their support of the FISA bill. Whether it was real or fake, I suspect real, it probably doesn't matter at this point. They are letting all of this happen with absolutely no concern for the Constitution.

We will have absolutely no rights and they will have absolute power over us, if that isn't true already (in legislation). We will consider it for our own protection, because they can attack us anywhere, and they are everywhere. After all, I John Q. Public, have nothing to hide. My neighbor who was just taken away had to have done something wrong, right? They told me he did and I trust them. Surely they knew something I didn't. They caught him...

Screw Barry Bonds, Lindsey Lohan, Michael Vick, or whatever other piece of shit story is out! We are losing the country goddammit. Doesn't anyone care? Seriously, does anyone even see this?

5. Did you ever see an old movie called "Gabriel Over The White House"?
Walter Huston (John's father) was the president and he convinced Congress to invalidate itself for the good of the country, and they did it and cheered. The president turned a constitutional republic into a fascist dictatorship in the name of "saving the country".

Too scary with life imitating art.

7. No, I haven't, wow

It is ironic that the date the movie was released was 1933, the same year that a fascist coup plot was initiated by Dupont, and none other than George Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush (BBC documentary). We must take works of fiction seriously. They are after all, partially inspired by truth. Sometimes you even get wackos who use them for inspiration.

9. Wait
After reading the comments, this movie seems to be propaganda directly related to the Business Plot in 1933. It was just part of the coup and was even produced by William Randolph Hearst.

That is scary. Maybe we'll get a similar movie out this year. Have we already?

10. That *is* scarey
Fortunately, Hollywood is owned lock, stock and barrel by liberal Jewish homosexuals who vociferously hate America and would never help promote a wholesome, conservative Christian movie. :sarcasm:

11. Trust me, your eyes will bug out if you ever get a chance to see it.
I was totally unprepared when I saw it on TMC and the scene where Huston just takes over the country, I was screaming at the TV.
