Right-Winger Accuses Iraq Vet Of ‘Stabbing’ His ‘Fellow Men And Women In Uniform’ In The Back

During a debate on MSNBC’s Hardball this evening, retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Robert “Buzz” Patterson, a right-wing radio host, gratuitously attacked Iraq war veteran Jon Soltz, the chairman of VoteVets.org, exclaiming “I am so happy you’re not serving in Iraq right now, stabbing your fellow men and women in uniform like you do back in the states.”

Patterson claimed that Soltz didn’t know what he was talking about because he “didn’t get the memo” that “we’re fighting al Qaeda in Iraq.” “You know what, I don’t need the memo because I was in Iraq,” responded Soltz. “You read the newspaper, I was in Iraq. That’s the difference between you and I.”

Patterson muttered back that he had “been to Iraq too,” but Soltz laughed at his claim. “Are you talking about your rah-rah-sis-kum-bah cheerleader tours that the White House took you on or are you talking about as a soldier who took the country?”

The fact that “Buzz” Patterson would accuse a political opponent such as Soltz of betraying his fellow Americans should come as no surprise. In a May 2007 interview with National Review Online, Patterson accused “Democrat politicians, big media, academia, popular culture, and nongovernmental organizations” of forming “a Fifth Column” that is “facilitating defeat against Islamo-fascism.”

Additionally, Patterson’s only experience in Iraq was part of a dog-and-pony show tour of Iraq. In 2005, Patterson, along with four other conservative talk show hosts, traveled to Iraq on a “truth tour” to tell “the good news that the old-line liberal news media won’t tell you about.” That visit was shepherded by the Office of Media Outreach, a taxpayer-funded publicity arm of the Department of Defense.

Patterson has never been interested in debating the merits of redeployment; instead, he repeatedly falls back on accusing Bush critics of treason. And yet he’s given a high-profile platform to spout his over-the-top rhetoric.

1. Whatever you say, "Buzz".
Maybe you can go have a beer with Scooter while you discuss how seriously people with third-grade nicknames should be taken when it comes to political opinions. Or, wait, is your name what you got when you smelled napalm in the morning?

14. Indeed. The Air Farce gets some of the absolute worst.
Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 09:59 PM by TahitiNut
While the vast majority of men and women in all the services serve honorably, the Air Farce suffers from the "video warrior" who uses stand-off weaponry and exposes his own butt not at all. This is particularly true in enormously asymmetrical conflicts ... or operations against civilian targets with the purported cover of 'terrorism.' Killing dozens from a mile up in the pretty blue sky saves one's "beautiful mind" from actually seeing the carnage ... and possibly smudging one's tunic.

Today's "long reach" weapons of warfare don't belong in the hands of the myopic ... or those who seek to profit from the misery of others.

18. Yep--you've summed it up well. Long-distance killing and then returning
to a fairly safe and comfortable base each night generally leads to a more positive war experience, LOL! Not dissing ALL the AF, mind you--there are career fields (explosive ordnance disposal, Security police, combat controllers, pararescue, etc) that do get in the danger zone, and I have respect for pilots--but overall it's a much safer, more coddled branch. It leads to unrealistically sunny attitudes about combat.

I would be willing to do so but I think it wouldn't have a return address because I don't want the lynch men kicking my door in. Find out the address, I would enjoy doing that!

13. My Hardblogger submission
KOOK LIES ABOUT THE CLINTONS WHOLESALER BUZZ PATTERSON ALLOWED ON TV AS AN ANALYST!

Matthews actually let kook fringe author Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson on his show and used Patterson to analyze past, present and future activities of Hillary Clinton. Patterson repeated one of his kook yarns about the Clintons refusing to allow enlisted men to wear their uniforms in the White House because the Clintons hated the military so much. The Washington Post debunked that Patterson lie years ago. Even Patterson changed the story between Hillary actually doing it and trying to do it.

One of the most publicized tales ever told by Patterson was about a supposed chance to kill Bin Laden that was lost because Bill Clinton was out playing golf and nobody knew where he was. According to Patterson, when Clinton was finally located, Clinton couldn't make up his mind about whether or not to take Bin Laden out. In Patterson's book he carefully describes a similar incident, never using the first person or attributing the story to anyone.

In this interview on the web with Judicial Watch, Patterson goes all out, and claims to have been an eyewitness and even involved in the chain of command. Patterson couldn't have possibly seen such a thing. According to his own biography, Patterson quit working at the White House in May of 1998. The orders to kill Bin Laden weren't signed until August of 1998. There is no way Patterson could have been an eyewitness to an attempt to kill Bin Laden with a missile.

From the interview:

"We had actually located bin Laden and pinpointed his location very, very specifically. We had a Tomahawk missile strike planned to assassinate him, but we only had a two-hour window. President Clinton couldn’t be located. And then when we finally got him on the phone, he waffled until bin Laden got away and no strike was taken".

Fitton: What do you mean, you couldn’t locate the President? Where was he?

Patterson: He was playing golf.

I read the 9/11 report and couldn't find any mention at all of Patterson or this incident. That's probably because the 9/11 commission either knew up front that Patterson is a kook story peddler, or they found out after they interviewed him.

Patterson tells lots of other crazy stories too. I'd like to know how in the world Chris Matthews could use such a nut on his show. This isn't the 90s anymore, where you could get away with boosting ratings by telling endless lies about the Clintons.

Seriously nuts. I can't see even Matthews inviting him back. He was all hyperbole and ad hominum attacks. He was nearly foaming at the mouth. Guy was in serious need of sedation. It was one of the most bizarre exchanges I've ever seen on Hardball.

Send a valium to Buzz. He needs it.
