a bunch of conservative assholes did everything they could to delay Andy's treatment...some went so far as to call paypal and pretend that they had made donations to the DU fundraiser but were concerned that it was a scam, thereby delaying the dollars that Andy needed to have his surgery.

They took it so far as to set up a website claiming that Andy really wasn't dying of cancer and that the DU fundraiser was a scam.

It was horrific and ugly. There were some rumors floating around that Bev Harris was involved in scamdy, too. (Bev has to bear her own burden for Andy's death--namely that she publicly fired him on her website's front page and made up a bunch of lies about WHY, and also, if I recall correctly, she had not secured health insurance for him as her employee. DUers correct me if I'm wrong on that part.)

An ugly chapter in internet history that now is closed...and hopefully sealed shut, now that they no longer have the scamdy.com media to propagate their insanity.

The name "scamdy" is rotten. If Andy deserves a memorial website, it should be set up under his real name, not the slanderous "scamdy" domain.

I wish that DU had a sub-forum to memorialize DUers who have passed on...especially now that we're over 130K strong.

I think that Ben should use the scamdy.com site to out the assholes who targeted Andy--no, that'd just give them the attention they obviously didn't mind, since they have no human conscience.

Or he should just put up a front page that says nothing more than:

"This website was an abomination. It's been shut down, never to return."

I was young when this happened. Young in internet years. I just watched from the outside, like I did with the Bev Harris threads. Not knowing what was going on. That's how much I have learned here in two or three years. That's what I owe this place. This is how much we've accomplished. This was not long ago. Anyways, I did a google search on Andy hoping I would find a Wiki page. I didn't find one.

Andy was beloved and nothing will ever change that. He did so much so selflessly for others that when he was in need, the community stepped up with so much vigor, it was hard to keep up with the response. I got calls and emails from everyone from Gore Vidal to my own neighbors.

And it wouldn't have been possible without DU. Not at all.

And that's what drove the haters crazy. We got good and effective.
