Kids who throw drinks back at drive-thru windows.. (I know how to thwart them)
Edited on Thu Aug-09-07 03:20 PM by SoCalDem

Install one of these babies in the drive thru lane with a button on the counter...

when a drink is thrown back at the employee..press the button and those brats aren't going far...

then call the police and charge them with assault..

4. Apparently this is the new YouTube prank..
Kids order drinks and when the employee hands them to the people in the car, they throw them back and yell "Fire in the hole"...splashing soda all over that low paid employee who will have to spend the rest of his/her shift in wet sticky clothing and shoes..

really funny, huh?

262. I have a better idea: BAN ALL DRIVE-THRU FOOD except for those with handicapped placards
Do you ever wonder how MANY cars sit at idle during the day at lunchtime, dinnertime? MILLIONS. Think of the reduction in greenhouse gases caused by banning drive-thru food. Think of all the obese people who'd lose weight because they'd either have to get out of their car, or fore-go fattening fast food. Think of how many heart attacks would be avoided, or how many blocked arteries, and how many heart surgeries.

On the other side of the coin, I wonder if these kids who pull such a hurtful, insulting prank have ever known the sting of corporal punishment as a small child...

229. well, that's the point.
It happens all the time.

Someone feels wronged by a store in some way, the details and moral outrage follows, and the punchline always involves a tale of heroism involving the poster shouting at or insulting a minimum wage retail employee, usually a cashier or returns clerk or security guard or something.

I wouldn't be suprised to find people who thought these sort of pranks were kids exercising their free speech rights.

You don't think that someone working in a drive through gets insulted or upset because some little fucktard with a bullshit sense of self importance tosses a drink at them? You don't think that one of their first thoughts is about how for minimum wage, they just don't need this shit? You don't think that it hurts?

I would wish things on your mother, but, even though she obviously failed to turn out a quality product I hesitate to blame her for your deficiencies.

Karma is a bitch.

I hope when you are very, very old, some stupid fuck-witted punk knocks your walker out from under you and laughs while you cry in fear as you fall. You will have earned it. When you are lying there on the sidewalk still shaking a little, your dignity in ruins, wondering why, . . . may you remember the things you said tonight.

151. Damn. I LOVE that story.
Just love it.
I have this little movie clip in my head now. Runs like this;
Dickhead patron throws coffee on waitress.
Film instantly goes to slo-mo
Look of surprise on waitress' face turns to steely resolve in a nanosecond, as the first drops land on her uniform.
Camera pulls back to show the coffee glob beginning to land on her as she begins to come forward with her right side.
As the last drops contact her and before they even hit the floor, the butt of her open palm smashes dickheads nose flat.
Dickhead falls backward to the floor as the coffee now is splashing off her and onto the table.
Film speed returns to normal, she reaches for is napkin to wipe herself off with but in doing so, "accidentally" pushes his plate of food onto his sprawling body.

"Oops. Sorry. I slipped"

Your bro must rock to back up his staff like that. Good on em.

She hit the guy on the button without even thinking about doing it. It was an automatic defensive move.

My brother really makes his living as an attorney. A very successful attorney. He just had the restaurant/bar business on the side because he liked doing it. I used to help out on the line in a pinch. We had a blast at that place.

He always got a big kick out of patrons that threatened to sue, for whatever silly reason. He'd give them his card in case they needed a good attorney.

He's a nut. But he did treat his help very well, there were people on a list trying to get in to work for him.

267. No kidding - so called "happy slapping" in the UK got out of control
Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 10:37 AM by holboz
It started out with some kids just slapping random people's backs on the street as they filmed the victim's reactions on their mobile phones. Then, as everyone tried to top on another, it got worse and worse until people were flat being assaulted with severe injuries...and stupid twat kids filmed everything so it was damn easy to track them down and prosecute.

If anything, this sort of "filming my pathetic behaviour for 15 minutes of online fame" is a sad commentary on our youth.

Anyone who thinks someone (or something, such as an animal) being assaulted in ANY sort of fashion is truly lacking empathy and decent moral fiber.

and start lobbing in smoke bombs, or firecrackers, or bags of dogshit or some other such thing.
Obviously some are already bored with it, since they're starting to spike the drinks with pepper concoctions, etc.

The IED comparison is a valid one, to me, because it's the same concept. Cause havok to someone else at a safe distance, anonymously, and get away with it. It's just simply cowardly.

How anybody can derive amusement from other people's humiliation (or other suffering) is way beyond me.

105. or, of course, once somebody gets doused with a "harmless" coke...
and in the natural reaction to turn away, slips, falls and cracks their head on the counter. Or the straw blinds an eye.

Quick story, as a kid we used to play a game called "apple wars" where you put an apple on the end of a willow branch and fling them at each other (just the apple, not the stick, of course). Seemingly harmless, sure, until one time my friend flung one at me from close range, hit me square in the eye and ever since then I have had vision problems in that eye. That happened 40 years ago. Oh yeah, everybody laughed, including me, until after a couple of weeks and I was still seeing a white dot in the center of my eye.

When parents say "Don't do that, you'll poke someone's eye out!", it's for good reason.

202. How can you honestly find this funny?
A spoiled middle-class kid, giggling insecurely, trying to be cool and of the herd, throws a drink at another human being, who, because they are behind a window--and because even if they were not behind a window, they need that job to pay bills--cannot do anything. That's funny?

These are pathetic, disgusting human beings, and future Republican voters.

Interesting that you can peg political affilation by someone's actions.

The obnoxious and misbehaving kids I see on the DC subway are more likely to be the children of Democrats going by general appearances.

But I bet most of these criminals grow up to be Republicans. Dumb, selfish, cowardly, oblivious to other people's feelings, herd-like: great predictors for future voting behavior.

I'll have to admit that when I see drunken frat-boy jock types (and I've seen 'em, alright, one crashed his brand new mustang into my house!), the first thing I think of is... "republican idiot". I know, I know, Democrats raise dickheads as well, but I wonder what the percentages would show? My guess would be significant number of these jerks stem from republican households.

I'm curious, though, what "general appearances" do children of Democrats exhibit? I've always kind of based my stereotypic political assumptions on behavior, not looks.

Somehow it becomes slightly funnier when its a suburban kid earning some spending money than when it's a Bengali immigrant trying to pay the rent and make it in this country.

230. Your sense of humor very well may do exactly that
Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 12:50 AM by kgfnally
Your sense of humor could easily get you fired for cause should you tell the wrong jokes over and over- you know, after being repeatedly asked not to by a blonde employee, you keep telling blonde jokes over.. and over... and over.... because that's acceptable to your sense of humor.

I can see a hostile work environment claim arising from that, even if you can't. So that's one example. I'm not saying you would do just exactly that, either, so don't harp at me about how you don't like blonde jokes.

I'll leave out racial 'humor', because I don't think even you find that acceptable. However, one never knows for certain, so I thought I'd just go ahead and mention it.

If you find gay jokes funny, you could be in for a world of hurt- especially if you live in an area where we're covered under any sort of nondiscrimination statute. I personally would not only take offense to someone telling pejorative gay jokes, especially if those 'jokes' carried with them some subtle, threatening undertone- I'd be more than a little concerned. Keying someone's car with the words 'rump ranger' is NOT funny, even if you think it is.

I think you ought to give some very serious, deep soul-searching about what you think is funny before you post anything about your sense of 'humor' again. This shit really is not funny. For the people it happens to, it can be embarassing, depressing, and downright dangerous to the people around them if they're already having a crappy day- or even more easily, themselves. As another poster said, they could slip and fall on the spilled drink as they're storming off in embarassment (or just storming off all pissed off) and crack their heads open on the floor, or one of those counters. I'll assume you realize how this very bad situation could occur in the aftermath, since you claim you once worked fast food, and thus know about the already greasy floors, the sharp, metal corners, the hot, liquid grease vats, the hot metal surfaces from the heat lamps... why, golly, Vern, there's a whole list of bad shit that could happen to an employee who has to deal with your funny little prank.

And no, I'm not 'up on my high horse', because I remeber working in places like that, and I remember the very real dangers I had to deal with and learn to avoid. But in a slip-and-fall, that's not always possible. Then again, it seems only people who are well-educated in the risks and dangers of such a job know how dangerous a 'prank' like this can be, and on how many levels the danger can occur.

(By the way- I work with a guy who has a mentally handicapped son, and if I consistently laughed about 'how retarded people act', I would definitely lose my job. You, sir, are wrong on all counts.)

A good education, whether it is the structured education of pedagogy or the unstructured education of caring parents, is - among other things - supposed to ease you from childhood into adulthood. Your complete disregard for the feelings or safety of others shows that you are still a child.

53. Sorry about that...
Probably the worse thing we did was when we took a good sized pumpkin, loaded it with fireworks left over from 4th of July, put it in the middle of the street, and blew it up. This was a big pumpkin, almost 3 feet wide. Of course, this was my OWN pumpkin, carved it myself, and this was well after the kids were trick or treating, I was munching on some candy myself at the time. The explosion was pretty big, if I do say so myself, left a nice scorch mark on the street, and there was no pieces of the pumpkin left bigger than a couple of inches across.

You ever played "baseball" with the small pumpkins, that creates a mess. :)

Toilet papering someone's yard, moving real estate signs to houses across the street, throwing pool furniture in the pool, all are stupid and irritating, but not harmful.

Throwing a beverage on someone is a very hurtful thing. And in this case, not deserved at all. They could get hit in the eye with an ice cube and be injured. And they probably don't have health insurance.

This type of behavior should not be condoned or encouraged.

fortunately, i limit my assaults to verbal ones, and thankfully most of the brats are unaware of the fact i'm insulting them. sarcasm is your friend, and i'm shocked that so few kids today are able to recognize it, much less use it.

122. It is TOO assault and battery.
Yes I am a lawyer but I don't play one on TV.

Assault is the action -- battery is the contact and resulting damage.

Assault would be shooting at someone and missing.

There is a Supremes case from the early 1960s that said that snatching a plate out of a black man's hands in a buffet line at a motel was "offensive touching" and therefore assault and battery. The defendant was "Carousel Motor Hotel, Inc." I believe.

I got assaulted a lot in jr. high and high school. Kids tried to kill me at Red Rover, and we should have called the cops. I never learned to fight back because I am little.

Pulling someone's pants down is ALSO Assault and battery.

Torts class, by the way, is nine months long. Two semesters.

312. Yeah, that makes sense.
:eyes:

Yes, I have thrown a snowball at somebody. You know what the difference was between that and the drive-thru situation?

I threw the snowball at somebody I knew, who was expecting it, given the situation (us messing around in the snow), and he threw it right back at me.

Now, if I were to get a snowball and pelt the drive-thru clerk with it, when he has no reasonable expectation to be hit with it, given his job and the fact that I am a random stranger, yes, that IS assault.

Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 03:18 PM by Starbucks Anarchist
A) We were surrounded by snow.

B) We knew each other personally.

C) We both had equal access to snowballs.

D) All of the above pretty much indicates reasonable expectation.

Now if I were to take my snowball, walk up the street and pelt a guy sitting on his porch, minding his own business, that would NOT be a "reasonable expectation"-- the "rules of engagement" are entirely different.

338. Laughing at something doesnt make you a moron.
Not laughing at something that is funny (slipping on a banana peel, someones chair collapsing) just because you think others will find you to be "shit-for-brains" is being a moron. Laughter is not premeditated it is a natural response to something amusing, and it shows nothing about the intelligence of a person. Most people on this site are a bunch of whiny babies who look for chances to claim their "moral/ethical superiority" by labeling anything they disagree with as stupid, or shit-for-brains. There are many things I find funny, some of them crude, some are pranks, but I am not so stuck up my own ass not to laugh. This would truly be shit-for-brains.

It's not the laughing at something amusing that is your problem, the fact that you find the humiliation and pain of other people amusing is the problem.

The fact that you can't figure that out indicates you may just be the moran people here think you are. But why would you care what a bunch of whiny babies think of you?

197. Hopefully stupidity like yours stops at the state line.
Edited on Thu Aug-09-07 09:14 PM by Maddy McCall
One thing I've always prided myself on, as far as being a Southerner, is that most Southerners (at least here on the Mississippi side of the state line) are friendly, hospitable, and look out for fellow humans.

You, though, are proof that such qualities aren't universal. You're also proof that people actually go through college (junior college?) without learning anything about the world around them.

You aren't typical of 21st century Southerners. You might have fit right in in 1964, but there's no place for idiots like you today.

You know, your callousness and immaturity shows through you all of the time, and it certainly will when you go for job interviews. If you truly see nothing wrong with "fire in the hole," I expect you to have a long and difficult life. You'll never get a decent job, because your sadistic sense of humor will out itself. You'll never be happy in a relationship, because saying "it was just a joke" doesn't always make the people you wrong feel better. You'll raise kids to be assholes just like you are.

You've got a lot to learn about life, grasshopper. I hope that you develop that generous and empathetic sense of humanity that seems to characterize the South that I know.

I don't know how you made it through four years of college...I can spot kids like you in my classroom from a mile away. Maybe it would have made a difference if you'd spent a little time in my classroom.

denial that their kid could do anything wrong.

Samples: "My daughter wasn't smoking in the bathroom, she was holding someone else's cigarette" (and smoke was coming out her mouth because. . .???)

"My son/daughter didn't know there was vodka in the orange juice being passed around on the bus on that field trip." (Yeah, teenagers are well known for sharing orange juice. . . not!)

I didn't expect the worst of mine, by any means, but I never said "My kid would never do that."

one of the 20/20 type shows did a piece on them and they told about a 12 or 13 year old girl beating the crap out of another kid on the bus. The principal suspended the girl and her mom came up to school, going off on the principal that her daughter was an angel and would never do this, etc etc. Then the principal stood up, walked over to a VCR in his office and turned it on. There was this mom's angelic little daughter, in all her glory, beating the crap out of the other kid ON TAPE.

I will never forget the look on the mom's face. Priceless.

27. I worked fast food for many years, and I have a few stories to tell about this
Imagine: Tucson, 1986. I was shift manager in a chain called Whataburger, at a store about half a mile from the University of Arizona's fraternity row. We were open 24 a day and, as the newbie, I got stuck with the graveyard shift. The one with not only a daily bar rush but also a twice-a-year frat rush. Incidents like thrown soda was all to common.

To combat that problem (and after one of our employees became a stalking victim), we installed two video cameras, both on a two hour loop. One had a very clear shot inside most cars parked at the drive-through window. The other was in our speaker board and got a very clear shot of the vehicle's license plate.

After those were installed, incidents would be reported to the police, who took the charges very seriously. And yes, we put more than a few frat brats in jail before word spread that we were not to be a target of their "highjinks."

"They FUCK YOU at the drive-thru, okay? They FUCK YOU at the drive-thru! They know you're gonna be miles away before you find out you got fucked! They know you're not gonna turn around and go back, they don't care. So who gets fucked? Ol' Leo Getz! Okay, sure! I don't give a fuck! I'm not eating this tuna, okay?"

Seriously though... when they catch the shit-smears who pull that kind of stunt, they should be sentenced to serving 100 hours of service at the drive-thru with out pay (hell, make them work the victims assigned shift for a couple weeks with the victim receiving the wages for the hours worked).

I hate the whole idea, but it won't be long before these little shitstains will be lobbing firecrackers or some other shit in at them. A camera that catches the plate when they order, the face at the order box and another at the drive through window. Let the parents hire lawyers. Not going to beat video like that in court.

Charge 'em with battery, conspiracy to commit battery, property damage, conspiracy to commit property damage and when caught, send them to trial and confiscate the vehicle. Fuck them.

that place is getting sued. Someone else will be leaving at the same time, or someone will step on them. Or, the chickenshit drink thrower will attempt to flee and will step on them. For chrissakes, too many folks can't operate their cup of coffee at these places, never mind not impale themselves on deployed inground spikes.

I say give the drive thru folks a nice, high-powered paintball gun. Easy for the cops to find, ruins the paint, nice little dents all over it...

The way I see these kids are probably making low wages, probably hate their job as it is, just trying to get through the day, and then some jackoffs come by and throw stuff over them so they can post their little ass video on youtube and get a four star rating. . .

These kids are just doing their jobs, trying to provide customer food service, so just leave them the hell alone.

Maybe I just don't have a sense of humor.

Maybe this shit just isn't funny.

Edit: And now for my idiot moment. I just spelled humour two different ways.. which one is correct people?

As for vandalism by teenagers, under any name or description; I always warn my kids and their friends not to do anything in a group they wouldn't do by themselves. It's my theory that the individual IQ of any teenager should be divided by the number of teenagers in the group. there should also be a factor for the lateness of the hour. I wonder how many kids end up in court trying to explain just why they thought it was a good idea to throw rocks at a traffic signal, drop cement blocks off an overpass, smash a store window, etc, etc.

188. You reminded me of something
When my three boys were yong teens, they got into an altercation with some neigborhood kids..and of course my boys ran home.. I knew something was "up" by the way they were acting..

They said some older kids were harrassing them..and the next thing we heard was the sound of our 8ft sliding glass door shattering..

the older kids had followed my boys home..

I called the cops, and they looked all over the dining room to see if they could find a BULLET!!!..

Eventually they came to the conclusion that a chunk of concrete they found on the patio was the "culprit"..

That was a valuable lesson to my boys.. actions CAN have consequences..

what a MESS!..and of course since we have indoor pets, a lot of scrambling went on to secure the 4 ft HOLE in the back of the house until morning..

That damned replacement glass cost a LOT too!

215. When I Was a Young Delinquent
On Halloween we sometimes threw ink balloons at each other. We occasionally MOVED people's cars. Once we carried the coach's VW Bug down the block and put it in the ditch...which was dry and he just drove it home. On football game night we moved all the cars into different spots in the parking lot. (This was before anyone locked their cars.) We ran the gym teacher's underwear up the flagpole. Sometimes we sneaked a whiskey flask to school. We played hooky on occasion and went to the beach and got drunk and smoked weed. We did all sorts of things but for some reason we never would have thought doing something like this to another working class person would be funny. We would have actually found THIS offensive. Of course we were the poor kids. I guess it takes a more sophisticated sense of humor to think picking on the poorest of the workers is funny.

...whose thumb was broken so badly when he was in his late teens or early 20's that he needed a bone graft.

See, some jerk he worked with thought it would be funny to yank the ladder right out from under him. How hilarious is that!

So hilarious that it cost him a great deal of pain and surgery -- and came that close to crippling his right hand. If the surgery had not been successful, he never would have worked on aircraft for 45 years like he ended up doing.

And no, in my family we didn't think practical jokes were all that amusing.

286. Accountability.
Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 11:46 AM by Gregorian
I've got to edit this post. I was sitting here criticizing myself for sounding like I have an answer. And realizing that even the most intelligent kids in my high school were the ones doing the most damage around the community. Hell, even I broke and entered once. But I was so good at it, I didn't damage a thing, and even broke and entered to return the item when I was done. One of my friends told me recently that he believes he did a million dollars of damage in our town. I was totally blown away. Now he's a renowned musician and recording studio owner in San Francisco.

After saying all of that, I see an answer. Accountability. It's not something you get with big communities. Most of my problem answering posts come back to size. In smaller communities you don't do something without everyone knowing about it. I think that is what we're seeing. Fast paced, large communities. Kids can hide their damage and get away with it. The rest of my post I think also plays a part in keeping this under control.

Yes, these kids are assholes. Kids are full of energy, time, need to experience. And on and on. And yes, these kids are assholes. Just like the kids I grew up with. Just like George Bush.

I even did a little damage in my day. Very little. I was busy. I grew up in an intelligent neighborhood. People had goals and values. Not rules. We were guided, not caged.

I was far from perfect. But like these kids, I was angry with this society. And I was bored. But I was pushed to participate in a lot more than these kids are. Hospital volunteering, musical groups, boy scouts. I hardly had a moment of free time. All of my summers were volunteering at the local vets hospital. Once in a while I think of what I missed. Those beach parties. Bonding with my peers. And you know what? I didn't miss anything. I ended up watching open heart and autopsies. Not for everyone. But better than driving around drunk.

There is an answer. But the first step is to ask questions. It's not something we do in this society. Nobody asks. They just open a jail cell door.

I know Socaldem knows better. My first thought when I read her subject was almost her photo. My second thought was "why?".

We've put very little into this society that isn't profit driven. Yes, kids are kids. But that's only at first glance.

289. The fact of the matter is no one's ever taught these kids empathy.
What I found more disturbing than the videos were the posts of the DUer who finds them funny. I'm really bothered my the fact that to them publicly humiliating another person, who's done nothing except try to earn a living, is fine and dandy. Anger and boredom I understand, cruelty toward another living thing I do not.

I don't think throwing them in jail is an appropriate response. I agree with you, our society relies on that "remedy" far too often.

The diets we have. Or maybe something physical. Perhaps the kid who started it has sleep apnea. Or hypoglycemia. Or any number of things.

I have to say this might even come down to a health care issue. The last time I really saw a doctor was literally decades ago.

What about health research. Not this pharmaceutical corporate crap. Not pill pushing. But really finding out what problems the human body has.

We're not trying. Preemptive invasions of countries. But not preemptive health care.

296. These "kids" probably have never been accountable to anyone
My "suggestion" (snarky as spike strips are) was to finally make these little twits have to account to Mom ...explain to her why BOTH front tires are flat and why they are calling from a police station..

These kids may have "energy", but it's obvious that they are expending that energy in a less-than-productive way...with few consequences..

Do they show Mom and/or Dad their videos of their evening escapades? I doubt it..

Were they boy scouts? maybe when they were young.. Do they volunteer? probably not. My guess is that the parents of these "kids" would not even "push" them to volunteer..

I, in NO way suggested that this was funny..see post http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1552722&mesg_id=1552879

My spike strip pic was purely a lighthearted suggestion for "Payback...from the person who got doused by the idiots".. I know that no restaurant would do this, but in a Walter Mitty sort of way, who wouldn't wish they could react with something like this, if they had just been on the receiving end of a flying soft drink:)

298. That's pretty heavy.
I know you didn't mean it the way many here too it. There is a gap between the ideas you had, and the next step. I mean, the next step is way too serious. And it's probably a lot to do with why repubs want smaller gov't. They just don't see clearly. It's not smaller gov't, it's better gov't. That thing called common sense that is missing. Thinking rather than shoving an answer through.

Gun point is way different than a flying soft drink. And yet perhaps not far removed from the mindset, or lack thereof.

It IS the parents. Unless it's some kind of physiological problem. But that's a relative rarity in comparison to lame parents and the kids who are rebelling against them.

It all seems so obvious to some of us. Obvious, and still very difficult to answer. Even in small native American communities, I am certain there were miscreants. But we're manufacturing them here.

A few billion more in social programs, and we could have saved them.

322. I remember whenever we'd have a substitute teacher in high school
He/She would pass around the attendance roll to sign. People such as Mike Hunt, Dick Hertz, I.P. Freeley, Amanda Hugankiss, Hugh Gass and others would suddenly be enrolled in the class.

320. My daddy (and momma, too) would have switched me good
if I ever threw a coke (or milk shake, even if it was strawberry) at someone just because "it was funny." My own kids would have suffered a similar fate.

My own credo is that every person on earth is entitled to my respect (or at least tolerance), until proven otherwise.

But once that line is crossed... The gloves are off, and I can be a nasty little sumbitch when I put my mind to it.

The tire spikes are just fine with me. Go for it.

329. Actually, that would be battery, not assault.
Unless they scream at you too. Then it's assault AND battery.

335. guys, the dickhead in this thread doesn't represent recent college grads
Some of us know how truly shitty it is to be constantly dehumanized and victimized by working in a minimum wage fast food setting...not all of us college aged kids are of the kind that find these "pranks" to have any humor :(

I'm kinda saddened people are defending this shit.

I've had food thrown at me by my drunken colleagues when I worked late-nights at the college dining halls...it sucks. It isn't funny. At all.

346. I can't believe that this thread is still up
But for what it's worth, I think that establishments like these will not pay for expensive modifications like these for such a minor (although distressing for the low-paid workers) trend.

It's the ignoring of the workers POV that's the story here.
