<snip>

THE PRESIDENT: John, I suspect that over the course of the next months, when I hold a press conference, you'll be trying to get me to engage in presidential politics; trying to get me to opine about what candidates are saying, whether they be Republicans or Democrats. And hopefully I'll be disciplined enough not to fall prey to your question, not to fall into that trap.

To the question you asked, and to my answer in Camp David, I said I'm confident that we -- both the Paks and the Americans -- will be able to work up a plan, based upon actionable intelligence, that will bring the top al Qaeda targets to justice. I meant what I said. We spend a lot of time with the leadership in Pakistan, talking about what we will do with actionable intelligence. And the question was, am I confident that they will be brought to justice, and my answer to you is, yes, I am confident.

<snip>

Most sensitive Britons acquired a distaste for the word about 20 years ago when "Paki-bashing" was used by hooligans to describe beating up members of any ethnic minority.

Mr Adeeb believes it would have been acceptable had Mr Bush dropped one letter and referred to "the Paks". But four years ago the Clinton administration's national security adviser Sandy Berger began talking about "the Paks" and was forced to apologise.

Pennsylvania-based linguistics expert, Pradyumna Chauhan, said at the time that in the 1950s English racists wrote: "Keep The Paks Out, Keep The Pox Out", on the Thames Embankment, in London, implying that Pakistanis brought smallpox to England.

9. "Turk" and "Kurd" are the correct names
They're not pejoratives.

5. I heard Sec Def Gates say this
the other day on Wolf's Sunday show. I thought to myself, "Hey! He's not supposed to say that!" Wasn't this resolved a few years ago?

6. Couldn't believe my ears when I heard that this morning.

And what makes it even worse, is that the 2nd link you cite happened years ago. Shrub is simply incapable of learning or retaining anything it seems. :eyes:

7. The term "Japs" was acceptable until the late 50s.
Before that is was "Nips". It one time Japan was called Nippon. It seems that a lot of people like to shorten names.

11. Yes, they do.
Pakistani newspapers often shorten "Pakistan" or "Pakistani"--when it refers to the country--to "Pak". So "Pak-Chinese relations" or "the Pak-Australian football match" would be fine.

But never the adjective when applied to a person.

Otherwise it's like "Brits" or "Aussies". But they're not considered as offensive, I suspect, or at least the peoples are less easily offended. (Then again, I find "Anglo" to be offensive, so there.)

10. In the UK, at least. 'Pak' or 'Paki' is a racist term
Not used by decent people.
