Pvt. Lavena Johnson, was killed in Iraq on July 19th, 2005. Evidence points to assault and murder.

The Angry Independent, blogging for The Rude Pundit, has an amazing, profoundly disturbing post up about the apparent assault and murder of a young private in Iraq, the circumstances of which, the Army may have tried to cover up. Here is a portion of the post:

http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2007/08/americas-forgotten-soldier-much.html

...

Young Pvt. Lavena Johnson, was killed in Iraq on July 19th, 2005. Evidence in the case points to assault and murder. However, the Army has been covering up the killing, calling the soldiers death a suicide instead. The Army has refused to provide the family with key documents, and has ignored the families attempts to find answers in their daughters death.

Immediately after her death, the Army told the Johnson family that Lavena did not die from suicide. (1) But a few days later, the Army changed its story and called it a suicide by way of a self inflicted gunshot. The case was never properly investigated. The FBI should have taken over this case, once it appeared that foul play was involved.

The family put up an initial fight, but then the case faded.

Right after her death, I attempting to get more light shined on the issue. I wrote newspapers, and TV stations, without success. I guess they felt that it was more important to spend all of their time talking about Strippers like Anna Nicole Smith. I even attempted to get "Black Reporters" Tavis Smiley and Ed Gordon to cover this story, but neither of their programs ever responded to my e-mails via their websites.

I immediately saw red flags with this case, because the circumstances were so suspicious. First and foremost:

1. Lavena Johnson was not a candidate for suicide, based on all of the accounts that described her personality, demeanor, her spirit, etc. None of that pointed to suicide. Also, she was nearing the time when she would be coming home and had been making plans with her family.

2. Secondly, from a physical/scientific standpoint it would have been nearly impossible for her to shoot herself in the side of the head with an M-16 with her weak hand. The bullet wound was on the left side of her head, but Lavena was right handed. Typically this is not how a suicide would be done with an M-16 rifle. In addition, weapons residue & forensics tests showed that she did not even fire the weapon.

3. Her face and upper body showed signs that she had been beaten. She had a broken nose, a busted lip, and her front teeth had been knocked loose. The funeral service workers had to repair her face before her funeral. Other parts of her body also showed signs of trauma.

I did not want to push too hard at the time, because the family did not seem interested in dealing with the issue. They wanted to grieve instead.

But there are now new developments in the case, and the family is once again fighting for a new investigation. Local St. Louis TV Station KMOV Channel 4 covered the case this week, and even more evidence has surfaced in the case that was not previously reported. See video here. The new evidence supports the case that Lavena was brutally murdered in her tent....

10. so beautiful ...
Looking at the faces of our soldiers who have died always saddens me. This one especially tugs at my heart. I see a sweet young woman, beautiful and smart, with an amazing future ahead for her. George W. Bush destroyed that dream. It's truly sickening.

As I get older, my friends' kids are getting to be her age. I'm terrified for them.

3. She is from my town of Florissant
and I did not believe it was a sucide then.

Justice will hopefully be served eventually for the family. Nothing can bring their daughter back to them, but the truth might be nice.

4. The truth will be ugly.
But there are some unpunished murderers out there and justice might be nice.

5. I remember this case..
and I was thinking about it for the past few weeks when they were talking about Pat Tillman and I began to wonder how many others have been covered up.

could guess what this was about. I did read and I guessed correctly, but didn't guess about how horrible the beating part of it was.

Everyday we learn things about our country that proves one thing -

those people who constantly brag about how superior our country (i.e., people) is to other countries on the planet are absolutely loco - once upon a time we were superior technically - we gave it away, we moved it away, we sold it away, we traded it away and we treated the technicians and laborers connected to the technology as dirt - to be shoveled away and be as vocal as dirt.

9. Seems like sound instincts to me.
I had to restrain myself from putting the word "sexual" in front of "assault." But with or without that motive, she met a horrible fate and deserves justice to be served.

13. her case was mentioned during the hearing
on pat tillman's death a few months ago. i looked up the story. but i just this minute discovered (somehow i missed it or maybe i wasn't feeling it the way i am today) that Lavena was murdered on the 4th anniversary of my daughter's death.

it is beyond scandalous that someone gets away with murder for the sake of the military PR. millions more people need to be made aware of this young beautiful woman's life and death.

14. This is an outrage
Self-inflicted gunshot wounds do not cause teeth knocked loose, a broken nose, or a split lip. Any life lost in this war is tragic, but to be killed by someone who is supposed to be on the same side is criminal, and outrageous.

There seem to be many reports of female troops being raped, and molested. Terrible, that these women are being preyed on by their own countrymen.

15. Given how they are now recruiting crimnals, are we surprised?
They keep lowering the bar on enlistment requirements,
so sadly, I think we will see more crimes committed by troops
against troops.

16. There needs to be a national organization for this. Any ideas?
For starters, I'd suggest that Lavena Johnson's family needs to get better acquainted with the Tillmans.

18. That's a good question. There definitely is a need for an advocacy group for families
Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 09:42 AM by BurtWorm
like the Johnsons and Tilmans who are having to deal with stonewalling from the military around their family son or daughter's death. The DOJ is supposed to be that advocacy group, but I wouldn't trust them.
