Horne Slams High School War Protestors

August 7th, 2007 @ 5:15pm

by Doug Ramsey/KTAR

The Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction is unhappy with anti-war demonstrators who made appearances Monday at some Valley high school campuses.
Tom Horne said the protesters were doing more than telling students how to remove their names from military recruiting lists.

"In fact, what they're doing is propagandizing the students, urging them to take their names off the lists, trying to interfere with the recruiting process in order to hurt their own country," he said. "I think that's a terrible thing to do."

Horne called the actions of the demonstrators "destructive."

HORNE SAYS WAR PROTESTORS OUTSIDE ARIZONA HIGH SCHOOLS ARE SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE

PHOENIX (Tuesday, August 07, 2007) -- In response to reports that war protestors have been confronting high school students with a message critical of military recruiting efforts on high school campuses and passing out postcards asking students to remove their contact information from the public school list provided to recruiters, state schools superintendent Tom Horne issued the following statement:

"I’ve been working hard to get our schools to teach history, government and civics to our students. History teaches us that countries not willing to defend themselves soon disappear. Reasonable people can differ about a particular war, but to have adults teaching students to be hostile to the military institutions that defend our freedom is educationally dysfunctional. I urge these adults to look in the mirror and decide to do something constructive for education, rather than destructive. They have a First Amendment right to speak, but I have a First Amendment right to criticize them."

Superintendent Tom Horne is an elected official. He needs to hear from us (602)542-5393. AZ Dept. of Education 1535 West Jefferson St. Phoenix 85007 (Might be another person/location to protest)

2. He prollee cheated in history, government and civics. He needs to sit back and learn something.
Heh! :patriot: Especially when we show up on his doorstep with protest signs re just what in the hell is he having our teachers teach our kids in those three classes. Lying to kids, and then have them repeat lies, because that is what they've been taught, is that ethical?

3. Response.
Dissecting Tom Horne’s Anti-Counter-Recruitment Statement:

"I’ve been working hard to get our schools to teach history, government and civics to our students. History teaches us that countries not willing to defend themselves soon disappear.”

My history lessons taught me that our government is there to represent “We the People.” The United States of America is on the offense in Iraq, and we were never under attack by the people or government of that country. Superintendent Horne should look up “defend” in the dictionary.

“Reasonable people can differ about a particular war, but to have adults teaching students to be hostile to the military institutions that defend our freedom is educationally dysfunctional.”

The “reasonable people” all know that the Iraq war is based on lies. Only the ignorant people still believe Saddam had anything to do with 9/11, or that “freedom” is really at stake in Iraq.

“I urge these adults to look in the mirror and decide to do something constructive for education, rather than destructive.”

It is absolutely constructive to give students the other side of the story, so they can make an informed decision before putting their lives on the line. Urging peaceful people to be quiet and let students remain uninformed is as un-American as you can get.
