Brief update on my mother ..

I posted last week (Wednesday 8/1) that she had been admitted to the ICU for breathing problems and extremely high blood pressure (she is 85, with COPD). She bounced back real well and was discharged to home (and my 87 Y/O dad's care) on Friday 8/3.

Within nine hours she was back in an ambulance on the way to the ER and ICU. At around midnight last Friday night she had a seizure. It was the mother-of-all-seizures. It lasted over two hours. She was in a coma when I got down there on Saturday. She was still in a coma when I left on Sunday.

She has rallied a bit this week. Out of the ICU now. Her neurologist thinks she has had several small strokes since the big seizure last Friday. He started blood thinners today. I'm going back down there tomorrow or Sunday.

She has had a hell of a year. In March and April she spent eight weeks in Atlanta's Northside Hospital (where my brother practices radiology), followed by three weeks in a nursing home, for esophageal shingles and a MRSA abscess on her back. Shingles and staph; I've had both and it is hard to say which was the most painful. But my shingles were on my forearm (1967). I cannot imagine that pain in the esophagus.

Poor mom. Get well, dear.

That is a lot for her (and you and your family) to go through. I hope that she makes quick progress. A two-hour seizure sounds horrific.

I won't even describe the physical damage, other than to say she looked like she had gone 9 rounds with my friend Mohammad Ali.

16. I have a friend who spent some years living in Atlanta....

She is a lurker here, but I think I can post this.

Anyway (and this was 20-odd years ago) she was working for Ivan Allen the office supply company and met Mohammad Ali. She was quite impressed with how nice a guy he was.

Once again, the best of luck to your mother and all of you who love her. Old age is not for the timid.

Every Mom that I know (including mine who is 76) is tougher than we could ever hope to be.
I don't pray, but I'll ask whatever is up there to keep an eye on your Mom.
You only have one of those.
They deserve to stay around as long as possible.

I've been told that I have to watch for mouth sores, as the chemo I'm on can cause esophageal shingles. Like you I had shingles many years ago , mine on my lip and alongside my nose. Also like you I can remember the pain after all those years so I certainly don't want them down my throat.

But that's off subject. I'm not a prayerful person but your Mom has all my best wishes and any good vibes I might be able to send. You hang in there too.

My mom's been going through some health crap too, and was in the hospital recently for 3 weeks, home less than a week, then back in for a week, so I know what this is like.

30. My Dad is in his 80's and has COPD

It's an awful disease. He's tethered to oxygen 24 hours a day. His skin is breaking down due to the steroids that are necessary. He's had many ICU admissions. He's just not getting enough oxygen.

Funny thing is that he quit smoking 20 years before he came down with COPD. People with COPD suffer something awful.

DemoTex I hope your mother starts to feel better soon. Keep us posted. I've been around here since early 2001 and always enjoy your posts. Getting old is awful. I'm 53 and feeling all the aches and pains that go with it but I have the mind of a teenager still. How cruel is that?
