Weather Check-In...Brrrrr! It's 50 degress outside tonight!
On Boston's beautiful North Shore. I grew up in SC and noticed my hometown was at 88 degrees and a dewpoint of 82 degrees which equals a "real feel" temperature of 104. Yikes.

Where are you and what's the weather right now?

32. Where are you from? Is this weather more miserable than there?
I lived in Anchorage and I swear, the weather was better there than here. Of course, it got colder there in winter but it feels colder here. Amazingly its because of the humidity. Anchorage on the ocean was less humid than it is here. Summers were WONDERFUL!!! Except for the 22 hours of daylight per day. Unless we were up for a game of frisbee at 2:00 a.m.

Or anyway, it was before everything started shifting. Like the trade winds and the warm water currents.

42. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA--also quite warm and humid, but the
winters aren't as brutally cold as Nebraska's can be--doesn't get below zero very often there. But very gray skies much of the time. I know a few Air Force people that absolutely LOVED Anchorage. I haven't been there (Elmendorf?) but would like to see Alaska--one of my goals in life. We've mostly lived in the south and midwest. We're thinking of moving to Colorado next--a bit less humid there, don'tcha know!

Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 10:16 PM by Radio_Lady
I do better in temperate climates.

Lived there BEFORE air conditioning in the 1940s and 1950s. That was tough... Mom bought me a Carrier room airconditioner in 1954, and that was heaven. I ran it from April to October, when electricity was cheaper.

Dad financed my 1957 Chevrolet that year, and I installed one of the first car airconditioning units in the trunk. Paid $200 for it; one month's salary.

55. Laura Ingalls - factoids about Florida's horrible weather
Edited on Sat Aug-11-07 10:05 AM by Sarah Ibarruri
Oh my GOSH, you must've been beside yourself to have gotten that AC unit!!!!

You're right. It's awful here. Whenever we have gotten been thru a storm or hurricane that leaves us without electricity, people who are not as strong physically, actually die from the intense humidity and heat. The body is simply unable to cool itself off. Walking around outside is impossible. There are young joggers, but I'm sure they don't get much of a workout since the humidity and heat doesn't allow their body to be at their optimum.

Here's an interesting factoid which involves Florida weather! My sister, who is a fan of Laura Ingalls, the writer (she was the author of Little House on the Prairie, which was a sort of autobiographical account of Laura Ingalls' days as a child in the prairie), told me the true account of Laura Ingalls and her encounter with the horrible Florida weather. Goes like this. Turns out Laura married her sweetheart, Almanzo James Wilder (who also shows up in her books and the program!) Anyway, Almanzo and Laura got diphtheria. He got it worse and could no longer deal with cold weather (they were in Minnesota), so in 1891 they moved to Westville, Florida. By 1892, Laura was gravely ill from the horribly intense heat and humidity, was bedridden most of the time and it was thought she wouldn't make it if she remained in Florida. That year they left and moved to South Dakota, where she recuperated. :-)

Florida would not be a "spot" for anybody if there were no air conditioning. There'd be 10% of the current population living here... or less! I tell people that those who move to Florida do so to spend all their time inside. And it's true!

I'm moving to Rochester next year, God willing! I want to see other seasons other than 9 months of sweltering nightmare and a 3 month respite! :-)

67. Is that Rochester, MN or Rochester, NY? Either way, that's a BIG change!
Edited on Sat Aug-11-07 07:34 PM by Radio_Lady
My husband has stories about Rochester, NY, his first location after graduating Northeastern University in 1957. We know nothing about Rochester, MN.

But I'd rather have the snow and cold ... believe it or not. My husband tells me I must be part Inuit! He threatens to put me on an iceberg and float me out to sea... when I'm a REALLY old lady.

Most people think I'm nuts... but each brain is "set" at birth for some range of temperature. Contrary to popular opinion, blood does NOT thin and some people NEVER get used to hot weather. In my case, my body likes temps at about 60 - 65 degrees F. and LOWER, preferably with LOW humidity. I hardly EVER shiver and I DON'T wear a coat in Portland, Oregon. This place is a compromise for me. It's rarely cold enough for me here.

Mom, Dad, and me in Florida in the 1940s. Don't you just love that painted palm tree?

75. Here's the Rochester, NY weather backstory:
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 05:43 PM by Radio_Lady

In April 1957, my husband moved to Rochester, New York to work for Stromberg Carlson. He had driven his 1949 Chevrolet convertible with a hole in the floor behind the driver’s seat – all the way from Boston to Rochester, NY. The hole was big enough to see the street underneath! He had a small apartment in an area bordering the city, and in the evenings, he parked his car near his apartment. Months passed, and spring turned to a brief summer, then to winter. One night, he parked the car, and snow began to fall in earnest. The next morning, it was still snowing even harder. He looked and looked for his car, but it was GONE.

He called the police, and explained that somebody stole his eight-year-old car with a rust hole big enough to put two feet through. The cop chuckled, and said it was hardly likely that someone had stolen the car! It was probably parked on the wrong side of the street – perhaps ODD or EVEN numbers – nobody recalls now! The car was towed during the snow emergency. Hubby bundled himself up in a heavy coat, hat and gloves, and stood out on Alexander Street waiting for a bus to take him to the police station in downtown Rochester. He waited and waited with a bunch of other people. Finally, some Good Samaritan picked up some of the lucky folks, and he was driven to the police station, where he paid the fine and towing charges and received a receipt.

But the fun was just beginning! The car was NOT ACTUALLY THERE -- it was parked in a field outside of town! So, my husband had to get on another bus, and then a second one, to get to the tow lot. He finally made it, and showed his receipt to the guard at the lot. But, the lot was not plowed! There was a narrow area between the cars where it was OK to drive and walk, but there was snow up to the car's hubcaps. Without a shovel, good luck! However, hubby remembered that the guard had something stashed behind his chair. Hubby trudged back to the guard shack, and asked to borrow the shovel. After much cajoling the guard reluctantly parted with the shovel, and hubby was able to finally dig the car out and drive home.

As Northerners know, you HAVE to go, even in the snow. The blizzards in upstate New York – Albany – Syracuse - Buffalo - are spectacular. Asked about the summers in New York, one friend of my husband said, “When summer falls on a Sunday, we play golf.”

It's been a typical August in the D.C. area. I was outside most of the afternoon as part of a peace group at the local county fair. Whenever you thought you were about to die there would be a big breeze come up. (It blew stuff of the tables in our booth. It was still pretty fun if you could get a cup of iced tea. As long as your're hydrated and in the shade, it was alright.

Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler.

It's been really dry here. The farmers have suffered this year.

Usually at this time of year the pool is like bathwater - Not this year! In fact the water cools down as the sun goes down. Strange weather!!!

I blame it on the Arctic water coming down in the California Current which is carried eastward by the Westerlies. Makes sense to me.

48. We call it Celsius for a reason (but both are the same):
History of the Celsius temperature scale

Anders Celsius early became engaged in the general problem of weights and measures, including temperature measurements. Already as a student he assisted the astronomy professor Erik Burman in meteorology observations. At that time there existed a large variety of thermometers with different scales. Perhaps he already at this stage realized the necessity of a common international scale.

http://www.astro.uu.se/history/celsius_scale.html

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit

from Encyclopaedia Britannica

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (b. May 24, 1686 in Gdansk, died Sept. 16, 1736, The Hague), German physicist and maker of scientific instruments. He is best known for inventing the alcohol thermometer (1709) and mercury thermometer (1714) and for developing the Fahrenheit temperature scale; this scale is still commonly used in the United States.
...
Until the 1970s the Fahrenheit scale was in general common use in the English-speaking countries; the Celsius, or centigrade, scale was employed in most other countries and for scientific purposes worldwide. Since that time, however, most English-speaking countries have officially adopted the Celsius scale. The conversion formula for a temperature that is expressed on the Celsius representation is: F = (9/5 C) + 32.

Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

51. 62 at 3 a.m.--very pleasant, but the Zaca fire is 80,000 acres and dropping ash on us
Actually, the ash-fall is nowhere near as bad as it was a week ago, when the wind shifted and carried so much smoke over the mountains that it looked like a light snowfall. I was using an inhaler 4 times a day but counting my blessings that my lungs are nowhere near as sensitive as a lot of other peoples'.

According to the fire fighters the area of forest where the fire is hasn't burned in about a century, so it's all fuel at this point. California evolved to burn.

58. It was 55 degrees a bit north of NYC last night. That with the cool drizzle, it felt colder.
Really odd for August.

62. 102 Dallas-Ft Worth area
It's hot hot hot!

But really, this summer hasn't been too bad at all. Lots of rain in June. Rain in July. It didn't start getting really hot until this week and it's August.

71. Looks like we officially hit 100 for the first time this summer
Final stretch will be this week, topping out at 104 and then, maybe, we're back down to the 90's for the rest of the season...not that Texas HAS actual, distinct seasons.....If we can make it thru 3 months of 100+, what's one week!

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/081207dnmetweather.24aaf9c2.html

The first 100-degree day – an annual summer event that North Texans tend to regard with a mixture of pride and resignation – arrived late this year.

But it finally arrived.

The official thermometer at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport reached 100 degrees at 2:53 p.m. Saturday, making it the sixth-latest first occurrence on record.

The latest first 100-degree day was Aug. 23, 1989. No 100-degreee days were recorded in 1906 or 1973.

65. 96 degrees now in Platte City, Missouri
We went to an outside cookout at the grand opening of a grocery store. It didn't feel unbearably hot
while we were under the tent eating, but when you stepped out from under the tent it just about bowled
you over. This is supposed to last through most of next week.:P :P
