I've been watching the Utah mine situation closely....
And I apologize if this is morbid to some of you.

What is the likelihood that these guys could still be alive? No food, no water, unknown oxygen content in the air, constant 58% temps...

What do y'all think?

1. Depending on the amount of water that they are in...
I would think that hypothermia would be their biggest problem.

4. It's so sad.
Yeah, I think that that's a major concern...I hope that they are dressed for the cool air.

I just can't imagine being in a pitch dark mine, no light, no food or water.

I have another thought, but I didn't want to post it in the OP...what if they intuited the mine collapse and hurried to another area of the mine, and are sealed there...what if the rescuers are drilling in an area completely away from where the guys are trapped?

I don't know much about this, but I'm terrified for them and their families.

:(

It's terrible.

3. My dear Maddy...
I've wondered this myself...

I very much doubt that any of them are still alive...

And, no, I don't think you're being morbid at all...

Just realistic...

Unfortunately...

7. I really can't speculate
I actually tried after I read your post.

You point out some factors. Whether they survived the collapse is another.

But there is no 'likelihood.' It's one or the other. Or a mix. I guess I have the same mindset as the rescuers. Don't speculate, just soldier on until it is proven fruitless. Until that is proven, the likelihood is greater than zero, so you act as if it were 100. I can't get myself to pick a number in between.

12. Yeah, the rescuers have to keep on going...
and assuming that they'll be rescuing lives.

I know...I apologize for the morbidity of this thread. :(

9. I think the view on survivability for them is probably very dim...
I'd like nothing more than to see them come bounding out of there and hope they still do

14. It reminds me of when the russian sub Kursk sank and more
than a hundred sailors died. I had nightmares about that situation and this one is no better.

18. That was such a tragedy.
Again, I hate to be morbid, but I can't imagine a crueler death than to die because of lack of oxygen.

22. Oh, you LOVE being morbid!
 Kidding. You know, I think I'd hate most to burn to death. But dying any way, far from the ones you love, in the cold and dark, hearing others fall silent around you... that would be unimaginable hell.

17. Oh, Maddy
Have been keeping an eye on and an ear to this, too.

I hope they are alive, but have a feeling that things underground at the cave in are much worse than just being caught in some sort of space that hopefully has air.

It's a terrible situation, and the owner of this mine pisses me off.

Holding hope for the miners and their families

19. I've been riveted to news about it...
I guess the "not knowing" is one reason I'm riveted.

I can't imagine what those families must think--how they are coping, what can possibly be said to them to ease their worry.

23. I just missed a live news conference from the Utah mines.
Dammit...I don't know what was said in that news conference...all I caught was that the small-diamater hole missed the pocket where the miners are thought to be.
