My Precious... Any Of Our Candidates Say They Will Give Back The Powers Bush Took For Himself ???

And are there any here, that think a Democratic President should have them, or keep them?

I'm all for not playing nice with these Republican assholes, but I still put country above party.

1. Best. Ever. Thread. Title! (k&r)
Give back the powers. They weren't theirs for the taking. And no, I haven't heard a single candidate say she or he will give them back. It's like the Geneva Convention: We don't (didn't) torture because we wanted to ensure our own troops wouldn't be tortured if captured. In this case, we should give them back because we don't want other administrations to use them against us. Oh, wait.

5. Gordon Brown surrendered powers in Britain. Maybe we can get a
Dem candidate to agree to follow his example.

2. No they haven't! Bruce Fein pointed this out on Bill Moyer's
Journal.....once the power is there it will be used. I want to believe the Dems' candidates would rise above this temptation but so far they have given me no reason to believe.

again until we get an answer.

along with the Bush consolidation of power in the executive? They believe the next president is likely to be a Dem, and they like the idea of such power.

8. Dodd has...
I will try to find the link. I think it was a You Tube video. Obama has said we need to get back to 'basics'. I was hopeful when he said that that he meant the Constitution. That's pretty basic.

12. Here is a link
Dodd has stated repeatedly that he will work to restore the Constitution Day 1. He has struggled to Habeas Corpus back into our legal structure. He is a big 'rule of law' guy and I really like that about him.

Legislation introduced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAYXGyUGVFg
First day in office: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaV57BNJZmU

I don't know if he stated that he will roll back the signing statements specifically or if I inferred that from what he says in the videos above. The Constitution does not have 'signing statements' in it as we all know.

15. Thank You... That's A Good Start
Maybe we need to come up with a comprehensive list of what we'd like to see reversed as far as Bush's presidential power grab is concerned, and then have the candidates respond to that list.

16. That would be an excellent thing!
Here - let's start here:

FISA - returns to earlier state
Elections - paper ballots
Media - anti-trust laws reinstigated
Media - Fairness Doctrine gets reinstated
Constitution - Habeas Corpus reinstated
Constitution - Checks and Balances reinstated
Justice Department - Separate from the White House

What else - this is exhausting emotionally - what we have almost lost forever is so sad.

I have also wondered why our candidates haven't addressed this problem.

24. Kucinich has been against these abhorent abuse of powers since the begining.
He voted against the Patriot Act, and wishes to repeal it.<http://www2.kucinich.us/issues/patriot_act.php>

Kucinich also addresses this in his national security position<http://www2.kucinich.us/issues/national_security.php>

People keep saying the man is unelectable, but time and again he is right on the issues, and has been the most consistent of any presidential candidate.

26. Glad to hear it!
Slowly but surely people are hearing the word. I'm just hoping that the snowball rolls fast enough. This front loaded primary season sadly favors those with the most money and limits the ability of a dark horse riding Iowa or New Hampshire to a victory.

29. Great question
and I think we need to ask it but as of this time I don't think most of them will answer honestly. I do know that Kucinich is all about restoring the constitution but other than that I don't know. He is the only one I would believe at this time.

30. It Would Be A Great Way For Him To Further Distinguish Himself...
At the next debate, he could fire off a list of Bush's power grabs, and commit to eliminating said unauthorized powers. THEN, he could ask the rest of the field, "Who here will join me in this?"

I'd LOVE to see that!
