Aware of Slowly Becoming Frog Soup, But Unable to Jump |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-11-07 11:08 AM by Wiley50
The affluent got out of NOLA before the flood Those too poor to leave became the victims
Many Jews were affluent enough to leave Germany in the 1930's The poor became the victims of the holocaust
Like a frog in a pan of water quickly heating jumps out But if heated slowly becomes frog soup
The worst is being able to see what's coming despite the crap that the media is selling War, Economic Catastrophe, Police State, Possible Nuclear Attacks and be too poor to get out in time. It's both frightening and frustrating
I envy those of you who can afford to flee. and shake my head at Those of you who can flee, but don't
I've always thought the sense of duty that causes a crew to go down with the ship was a senseless sense of duty

2. I have always had Central America in mind |
|
Panama or Guatemala
But,considering my health these days, (on disability and not being able to legally leave the country and keep my (slim) income and not really being able to handle a lot of heat anymore)
If I had the money to move my boat (my home) to Seattle where my son lives That's where I'd go. Hoping to sail across to Canada quickly if the boot comes down. I'm getting to the age where I need to be near my son, anyway.
I really didn't expect anyone to answer this post It sounds so defeatist, and is. But I woke up to the "They wouldn't really attack Iran" thread and it just seems too futile anymore

These thoughts have been in the back of my mind since '04. My wife & I thought about going north to Canada, but decided against it. Our daughter was just a baby then..now she's 4. We need to get her a passport, like yesterday.. but it's been one of those things we've been putting off, either subconsciously, knowing that means we can go now if needed, or just plain laziness...it's prob'ly a little of both.
We'll ride it out though, hoping that the '08 elections change things. Bad news in those elections (i.e. a GOP victory) and we'll sell the house and head east to Europe. Geneva looks nice!

4. I would like to get out of the pot. |
|
Even better, I would like to extinguish the fire.
I feel like a fly caught in amber. Nothing I can do. Revelation upon revelation, it's obvious to the most casual observer that the country and, indeed, the world are being run by corporations and/or criminals, and yet things go on as usual.
My only comfort is having read Zinn's _A People's History of the United States_, which shows that things have been *nearly* this bad before and it's always taken a long time to correct. We are, after all, dealing with people.
That doesn't mean I have to like it.

7. There is a pattern, isn't it? |

Money is mobility. Poverty is futility.

8. I wish my wife and I would have left L.A. before 2000 |
|
At least then I have a job and the means to get the hell out . I thought at the time since we were doing fairly well why take the chance , I should have listened to her .
Now we are stuck with no means to move even to another state . Not that we would know were to go to , just a state that is less expensive to live but many states like FL have gotten expensive .
I wish we at least have an RV just in case all goes to hell , we would be mobile enough to perhaps keep going .
I just have a bad feeling things are not going to get better anytime soon and do feel the 2008 elections could be cancelled and I can't live in a dictatorship .
I was my wifes idea to get a computer , I never cared to get one , all the good ideas came from her while I thought work and my job would last forever .

17. The way things are going , we are going to need communes |
|
We are told there are jobs a plenty , if so then why can't I find a single one .
With the continued cost of everything going up and up people are going to need to pool their money just in order to survive and hope they get along well enough to benefit eachother .
I'm certain there are plenty of people who are doing ok for the time being , some of us will need a head start just to keep going .
I wish there were a way to gather like minded people who are willing to join in a commune effort where it works out well . I know there are plenty of people in big trouble at least thousands .
Of course here in L.A. you would never know people are falling through the cracks .

11. Boy, do I relate! I see the bubbling all around me, and yet |
|
have no options!
To tell you the truth, I'm a bit frustrated at so many countries that are doing well, and in the past the US took in immigrants from those countries. Yet, they see us poor folk in the US and don't let us in, knowing full well what awaits us.
Surely they could do a bit of "turnabout is fair play"?????
signed,
one more frog starting to boil....

that you would want to trade places with me if I told you my story. We can debate how far down the bottom of the bottomless pit is anytime. I'm not afraid to talk about it. I've been to hell and halfway back. Sounds like you are living it currently. My sympathies. I realize that doesn't mean much. But I do know what it's like.
Because I have been there before ( for an extended period) is why I say that there is the possibility to come out the other side of this. But we will need to believe in something better. & work together on it. It's the only way. So I tend to be positive. But not an optimist. There's a difference. Blind optimists haven't usually been through darkness.
Anyway I certainly don't want to offend anybody & maybe I should just shut up.

14. All of the people you mentioned (except Dennis) are millionaires |
|
and are used to years of having both money and political power
They would be expected to be optimistic.
They are also used to being able to leave this country when they want.
I hope they have a chance to change things and will do what I can to help them (although except for Dennis, I find them phony)
I hope that there is an election in 2008

but I still think they know they are working for us, whereas the Repugs are all about exploitation, period.
I don't think any of the Dems are OK with the state of things in this country. They may not have a feel for quite how bad people are hurting because their money and position insulates them, but I think they know we're on a course to disaster. They know it's dysfunctional and I honestly think they'd like the challenge and the triumph of repairing a lot of the damage. They take the pulse at ground level...they know...even if they don't experience the same sense of despair themselves (unlike the Repugs who really don't want to know & couldn't care less). Yes they all bear some guilt for where we are. No, all the Dems are not ideal. But they are all we've got right now to turn this thing around. I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for a big effort on their part tho. I'm looking for correction. If they got into the White House & congress and that didn't happen, then I'd say they blew their one remaining chance. But so far they've had to suffer an abusive rogue administration breaking all the rules, while the Dems attempting to play by the rules have been blocked and thwarted. We just don't KNOW what they'd do, given a large mandate, which after life under Bushco they'd certainly have.
Sorry to offend you or anybody here. Like I said, IF there IS one more stolen presidential election, I will abandon hope with the rest of the dead frogs. But we are not there yet, IMHO.

18. also unable to jump, Hubby tied to dialysis machine... |
|
3 days/week, on disability, and quite frail. I do feel fortunate we live in a "remote" area; the closest freeway is 45 min. from here, through quite a few hills.
Think good thoughts in our direction: Hubby has to go into the hospital tomorrow morning (yes, Sunday morning), for a semi-emergency procedure on his dialysis access. The clinic was unable to give him dialysis today, and he came home with extra holes in his arm. Here we go again. Sigh.
