WASHINGTON (AP) - Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday.
"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."

"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

1. That explains all the pro draft threads on DU over the
last couple of days. They're softening us up to accept the unacceptable.

Anyone who favors giving these madmen unlimited access to our children is NUTS.

12. I Know. I've Been Playing "Whack-a-Mole" on Them All Weekend
Someone is trying to gin up Democratic support for a draft.

They want to make sure that our party gets the blame when lots more kids come home in body bags.

They are gearing up for Iran, and they know they can't do it just by bombing.

3. This will bring out the female voters in droves
I know many women who didn't vote in '04 because they think there is no difference between candidates. The ironic thing is that these women are all moms of draft-age kids. I predict that if there is a draft or a real threat of a draft, these same women will finally start pay attention to politics and vote.

5. The republicans will not institute a draft
Hell, they're offering up to 50K for enlisting now. Now I can't say that Dems won't be forced to do it after the election and if it happens it will include all young people starting at age 20 for at least two years. Deferments will be issued for 3 reasons only, contentious objector, students of the ministry and hardship. Students currently in college will be allowed to finish up the semester. Contentious objectors will still have to serve in some capacity after showing draft boards their life long commitment to non violence. Students of religion will have to show proof of passing grades and attendance to an accredited seminary, and hardships like having to take care of a family member will be difficult to prove. I don't see the wealthy escaping as they did in the past. I'm hoping instead of instituting a draft, after the election we can end this illegal war. But if there is one, it will be more fair than past drafts, at least in my town where I have a role to play if it happens.

11. There's No Such Thing as a Fair Draft
Even if you have no deferments, there will be safe "champagne" units for the well-connected, or they can get their doctors to write them a letter.

We see examples of all of these among prominent wingnuts.

What is fair is to provide educational opportunities to all, that do not require one to become cannon fodder!

9. Not exactly
"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it, and I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table, but ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another. Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well. It would be a major policy shift — not actually a military, but a political policy shift to move to some other course."
Put in context, it is not nearly the same. "Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well" makes it a much different statement. Please don't quote such statements to a Bushbot because you may just get caught with your pants down.
