Impeachment supporters protest Pelosi's Stamford visit
By Donna Porstner
Staff Writer

Published August 10 2007

STAMFORD - War protesters were waiting for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday afternoon outside Il Falco restaurant on Broad Street, where she was headlining a fundraiser for a fellow Democrat.

About 15 demonstrators, mostly senior citizens gathered by the Connecticut Impeachment Movement, said they were disappointed in Pelosi for not supporting U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, in his efforts to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney. The plan, they said, is to impeach Cheney first and let President Bush choose a successor before he also is impeached.

"We believe there's no way the president is ever going to stop the war while he's in office, so the only way to stop the war is to impeach him," said protester Dorothy Hayes of Stamford. "We want to know if Nancy has the courage."

Pelosi said last year that she would not pursue impeachment in her role as speaker.

It's unclear whether Pelosi saw the demonstration; she was led in through the restaurant's rear entrance, which was cordoned off to the public during her two-hour visit, while police corralled protesters in front.

Pelosi hurriedly left the event, which was closed to the press, at about 2 p.m. in a Chevrolet Suburban without taking questions. A spokesman for Pelosi did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

State Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Dinardo also attended the event but could not be reached for comment.

The protest was organized by Richard Duffee of Stamford, who last year ran as a Green Party candidate for the 4th District Congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Bridgeport, but dropped out before the election.

6. No safe haven
The heart of elite territory. I used to live near there. If she's getting protests in Stamford, Nancy has a problem.

I wonder what the reception would be like in Darien, Greenwich or Ridgefield.

11. Good. May all the Cheney/bush protectors in US government
feel the heat. May they feel the heat also with giving Cheney/bush unchecked spying powers on the citizens of the US. Make sleeping at night hard for them. Sleep is hard for us that are no longer protected by the constitution.
