Al Jazeera, 12 August 2007:Sarkozy to Bush:
'"Do we agree on everything? No," he said, an apparent reference to the divisive Iraq war.
"Because maybe even within a family there are disagreements, but we are still a family. And we may be friends and not agree on everything, but we are friends."'Well, every leader says the same to Mr. Bush. Prodi and Brown did.
But when it's Sarko to say it - I don't why - I suspect this lovely "family" is in real tune.
Of course, Sarkozy is a good politician. He knows Bush is at its worse as to American and global satisfaction. He knows Dems are going to win.
Sarko likes to win. He's not a loser. So he won't expose himself more than necessary with a man who's making a mess of his Presidency.
'Bush, Sarkozy, and Bush's father, the former president George Bush, held a private meeting for about 50 minutes before lunch.'Can you imagine the three?
Bush likes the man. Perhaps he knows he's far more practiced as leader than he's always been. But he's too isolated now to show.
'The invite to the Bush family estate in Maine is unusual. Bush usually invites foreign allies to his ranch in Crawford, Texas, to show a special relationship.'Well, you know, friends DUers, we're lucky enough Bush is at the sunset of his experience.
This 'family' and the victorian portrait of the three having a chat (Georgy, Senior Bush and Sarko) causes a shiver down my spine.
