Hurrican Flossie (dial-up warning: graphics/images)

This storm could easily drift far enough north to score a direct hit on Hawaii.

It's currently a Cat 4 storm. How much damage could a direct hit from a Cat 4-5 storm scoring a direct hit on the islands do?

If extensive damage is done, where will the people who are made homeless go? Will Hawaii be treated different by this administration than New Orleans was?

Hope Flossie stays on her projected path. Prepare for 'what if' Hawaii DUers.

3. I'm guessing that a direct hit by a CAT4 will be about like this:

4. typical housing in hawaii is either brick block, concrete slab, or thin wood walls
concrete and block will do ok except for roofs and balconies, much of the housing stock is single panel wall nailed to studs. our house in mililani had a wall so thin a 2 inch nail went all the way through to the outside.

8. Those little wooden houses make sense in the climate, but aren't too sturdy in a big wind
My childhood home withstood torrential rains though, and since it was up on stilts the water just flowed right underneath.

Good luck to the people out there!

5. I hope it goes southwest and takes out Johnston Atoll.
I spent 9 months of a one year sentence there in 1973/74 while in the Air Farce.

6. No worry.
Hawaii is volcanic so it's porous. There are limited lowlands to flood. Might see some major slides and wind damage, but it ain't no NOLA.
