How I handled a fundraising call from the DSCC yesterday (Impeachment) |
|
Yesterday, my stomach was in knots and I was an emotional basket case. Perhaps one of two of my favorite cats of my lifetime who I've had for 13 years was going through surgery to remove a tumor from near his intestines. I was expecting a call at any minute from the surgeon to potentially ask me if they could put him down if there was evidence of cancer spreading discovered in the exploratory surgery.
I got a call... I answered...
It was from the DSCC starting to go into a spiel about how they needed more support. I cut him off and said, "Sorry, no money from me until I hear congress doing impeachments." and hung up.
I got a call not too long after that from the surgeon telling me that the surgery had gone fine, and that potentially he might not even have cancer if a theory that we both agreed possible that something he ate perforated his intestines or stomach that might have created a benign growth. I've known him to chew on a lot of nasty stuff like plastic, etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the biopsy next week might give me better news too.
Anyway, my question is, did I handle that call appropriately? I felt I did, even though I realize I probably would have cut everyone short if I'd gotten a call from them then instead of the doctor.

1. You handled it correctly |

I got a similar call, and did much the same thing.

You did. It's obviously the time for it, and things are changing here and there.
A Canadian friend of mine, one of the most patient women in the world, was just asked yesterday if she'd allow a sign on her lawn for the local conservative candidate. She said, "No." She was asked, "Well, you do support (insert name here) don't you?"
"Oh, not hardly!" was the answer....she left the woman sputtering and hung up.

Can't say that they'll actually listen, but you handled it well.

4. That WOULD have been a good reply had it been from the DCCC, but the Senate doesn't impeach... |

As it is, I've cut off the DCCC, but I think we need to give the dScc help to get more Senators in there to get a clear, non-Liebermann majority...

6. Initially my brain was thinking it might have been the DCCC too... |
|
My brain wasn't fully in gear at that point, being distracted with other things, but then I put it together that he was saying DSCC instead of DCCC. Had it been clearer it was from the DCCC at the beginning of the call, I think I would have cut him off sooner with my impeachment line.
I think it is a shared responsibility though that Congress must undertake now. Just the House doing something about it isn't going to cut it. When even people like Russell Feingold or Bernie Sanders are saying in comments in various places that there are higher priorities than impeachment efforts on their plate, I think we need to make sure that the Senate folks are also feeling that this is their mission too.

5. You did great! --- I'm so glad your cat is well, too. |
|
Isn't it funny how the possibility of a being that is so dear us being ill can color our lives in such a way, that nothing else really matters until we know they'll be okay? Again... so glad he's okay!

8. Going through what I went through yesterday gave me a better appreciation for Iraq vet families too! |

Up until this point, I as a single guy and with no other family members having anyone in Iraq, haven't been as directly affected by what's been going on in Iraq lately, and the daily worries that many of them must feel for getting those dreaded phone calls.
Thanks for the good wishes! Even though my cat wasn't a human being, I could definitely empathize at that point with many military families out there, knowing that their feelings must be worse, and be longer than the two weeks I endured of him getting special diets, etc. before finally getting ultrasound tests and the operation yesterday.
Not that I wasn't fully behind helping American families with loved ones in Iraq already. But I think it became clear to me the difference between not feeling those feelings of pain and the detached feelings that others have when they don't have any "investments" living over there. Solidifies my feelings that much more that this war MUST end soon!

The only time our input is valuable to them, it seems, is when they're asking for money. That response went through loud & clear.
I hope you get good news next week from the vet about your feline family member.

11. Yes. To them. I've contributed recently to Greg Palast's investigative |
|
fund. I'm thinking about contributing to Kucinich since he ALWAYS has a position that the historic Dem base would take.
To the rest, NOT ONE DIME until impeachment is on the table.

12. Perfect response and I hope everyone they call for a donation says the SAME THING. Maybe they'll get |
|
the message that they need to do their freakin' jobs before they're reelected to kiss MORE psycho ass.
It would have been fun to debate with the caller though. I understand your urgency to get off the phone, but had you not been expecting an important phone call, wouldn't it have been fun to hear their excuses? I wonder what their excuses are, at this point?

13. Yes, I think I would have "chatted" with them on that topic on another occasion... |
|
... and I have done so in other cases for other fundraising calls.
Just thought that this was the best "brief" and effective way to focus on more important things at the time.

15. Update... Unfortunately, found out that the growth was a malignant tumor... |
|
Hoping he still has a reasonably good life left, but it doesn't look like its going to be that long now... :(
