Poll question: Does democracy apply to economics or just cultural issues?
Amy Goodman of Democracy Now played a great speech by Naomi Klein that tied a lot of threads together:

the War on Terror

neoliberalism

Latin America's democratic revolt against the Washington consensus

the collapse of soviet communism and how it was spun

and it all boils down to this question:

Does democracy apply to economics?

The answer of Republicans and DLC Democrats is obvious: NO.

The DLC will calmly mouth platitudes about changing trade policies then do nothing (that helps average Americans anyway).

And the Republicans will only talk about Jesus and how much fairy dust weighs and never mention economics at all.

The full transcript of Klein's speech isn't up yet, but the candidate who could distill these ideas and repeat them often might win back some of those Reagan Democrats with an unvarnished progressive

1. What sucks the worst is that we can't even decide on personal morality.
We can drink our selves to death, yet we can't smoke pot because its the "devil weed." Straight people can get married and divorced as many times as they please (Rudy), yet gay people can't even get marriage rights. We can get drunk and have sex with multiple people at a bar who may have countless stds, yet we can't go to a regulated brothel. Ok the last one was a bit of a stretch but you get the point.

I don't believe we live in a democracy though, so I guess Im just whining.

2. K&R
If someone else controls the economic system, it doesn't matter about votes, even if they are counted correctly.

Everything boils down to economics, including legislated morality as mentioned above.
