Jenna Bush's Wag-the-Dog Wedding
...we need glamour and exotica to nurture our fantasies and we rarely get it from the White House. Except in one situation: the White House Wedding...in this most classical ritual, its elements crossing all social and cultural barriers, the President's daughter is brought down to our mundane level or we up to hers...The family understands the force of this deep identification and thus a White House Wedding becomes more than what it is--it becomes a Political Act.

It can do as much good for a President's current popularity as a quick troop withdrawal or a little minimum-wage boost. Indeed, after Tricia Nixon's blowout, her father's image went soaring, say pollsters. On that day the President was Everyman--the bumbling, blushing, semi-reluctant, wistful daddy losing his firstborn to another man's hearth. Touching, you'd have to call him. More vulnerable and appealing than we ever witnessed him, before or since.

No one will be able to explain, for sure, why Julie Nixon's reception was feted in a quiet, no-reporters soiree...and Tricia in White House splendor. Could it be that at the time of Julie's nuptials the newly elected President, who would be inaugurated one month later, felt a kingly outpouring of personal funds to be politically inopportune? But that three years later, at a troubled time when the Chief was running short in the brownie-points department, a big beautiful Rose Garden wedding catering to our love of pageantry, a family ceremony on a national scale--the closest we come to a coronation--
this sort of production might be exceedingly helpful, career-wise? No one knows. One can only speculate.

These words are from The Eternal Bliss Machine: America's Way of Wedding by Marcia Seligson, copyright 1973.

It just so happens that I reread them last month. And when I did, I thought about that line about how a White House wedding "can do as much good for a President's current popularity as a quick troop withdrawal or a little minimum-wage boost." And I thought "Hmm...do Jenna or Babs have any boyfriends they're serious about? I don't know. But if they do...boy, I bet their dad would love for them to help him out about now."

Of course, I then told myself that the idea that the White House would soon be staging a Bush-twin wedding just to boost the poll numbers was farfetched and silly. "They're a couple of party girls. Neither one of them is likely to marry anyone soon," I thought. "But you know what, I bet you she's right. I bet you it would work. Even today, it would work. Because for some people, it would transform Bush from that inept, tin-eared president who's sending people off to die in an ill-conceived war and taking your civil rights away, right back into that fella they'd like to have a beer with. I mean, who would you rather have a beer with than a guy who's just walked his darling baby down the aisle to take the arm of another man? Desperate times call for desperate measures."

And I read the news today and all I could think was...oh my God, it's going to happen. The Wag-the-Dog Wedding. For real.

Poll number boosting may not really be the goal, but I bet you any amount of money there will be an uptick. And they know it. And for that reason, the push will be on to schedule the wedding for next summer or early fall...just in time to get America feeling sentimental and kindly about Republicans again.

And you can bet that whoever the Republican presidential nominee is, or appears likely to be except for the shouting, will be invited and will not stay away...no matter how unpopular Georgie is. He will be there, and so will his wife, dressed to the nines and looking great. A free political ad for What You Get If You Vote for Me.

Maybe this is too tinfoil hat, but this wedding just could be Karl Rove's magnificent parting shot. He dropped this bug in Mr. Hager's ear, and then left the scene.

After all, who really needs him anymore...there's a WEDDING to plan.

26. This would be true if the people in power didn't care about the contents of *ANYONES'S* uterus
> or maybe the contents of her uterus isn't anyone's business here.

This would be true if the people in power didn't care about
the contents of *ANYONES'S* uterus, but they've made it clear
that they do, so I think it's only fair that we return the
favor.

In fact, I think a hymen check might be in order prior to
allowing the wedding to procede, especially if the bride-
to-be is wearing virginal white.

35. I always forget
It's okay for us to be sexist and racist so long as they are, too.

We just can't be the only ones acting that way, 'cause that would look bad.

36. It is occasionally important to play their own cards back against them.
If sex before marriage is wrong (per their platform),
then it's useful information for folks to know that
the kids of their standard bearer, their President
chosen by Jesus Christ hisself, are, in fact, sinning
adulterers.

24. Nah, she would just have another emergency apendectomy like
she did 12/25/2000.
Remember that her doting father went fishing in Florida with Poppy and Jeb instead of to the Hospital to be with his little girl.
When asked about her, he told reporters she could just go home and clean her room when she left the hospital.

5. Maybe she did just that ...
... so Mom comes to the rescue with a quickie 'announcement of engagement', and nobody's the wiser.

I went to high school in the mid-sixties, so I'm drawing water from an extremely familiar and oft-used well.

11. Yes, my first thought was "The Birdcage"
When the right winger (played by Gene Hackman) was worried about his political career with the news that his other right-winger friend had been caught with an underage, black girl, the mother decides that the best spin on this would be A WEDDING!!

13. I don't think she's pregnant, because that would mean a winter wedding
as a cover for the "preemie" baby she'd be giving birth to in the early spring (which would weigh far more than any preemie).

Nah. I predict an announcement of a wedding date if not in summer, around late September or October of next year. It won't be during the Dem convention because the Repug convention is too soon afterward and they'll all need time to recover from their drunken binge before heading for St. Paul. But late September or October is perfect. Nice weather, and by that time their nominee can parade himself in all his glory at the nuptials.

Jenna she is almost ugly. She has Laura's features but really that elongated chin. She looks like bush and Laura all rolled in one. I can't tell who Barbara looks like. She is pretty. Not bush or Laura.

I could just see her in a ugly green tulle dress with ruffles and a bow on her ass. Over the dominatrix boots, naturally. And being escorted by Karl Rove.

21. Interesting notion...
Certainly not out of the question, although IMO, despite my negative opinions toward Bush, even I have a hard time believing that he, or anyone for that matter, literally orchestrated his daughter's wedding.

But I can certainly see how this could result in a bump in approval rating for him, at least for a short while, so long as it reminds in the public's frontal lobes.

One distinct -- and hugely significant difference -- between Nixon and Bush's circumstances is the timing of the wedding. Nixon's came just after he was inaugurated -- he was already popular, and only got moreso. It's not clear how the wedding would have affected his popularity had it occurred at the height of his scandals.

Bush's is occurring at a time where he not only faces the usual negative opinion from the left, but increasingly has provoked the ire and anger from the right-wing base.

25. Ah, but as indicated above, Nixon had TWO weddings.
Julie's was right before his inauguration. By Tricia's, the bloom was off the rose in Vietnam, even though Watergate hadn't happened yet, and he needed something to give him a poll bump. And weddings always work.

Chasing the dog back to the ranch, a likely scenario, would move the wedding to the TX heat and humidity.
