A tsunami alert was issued by Japan's meteorological agency, but later lifted after two small waves a few centimetres high hit the coastline.
The quake's epicentre is thought to have been below the ocean off Miyagi prefecture.
More earthquakes have struck across the world in places as far apart as Spain in Europe and the Solomon Islands to the northeast of Australia.
A magnitude 6.7 quake has struck 75 km west-south-west of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands with the quake's epicentre about 2 km under the sea. No injuries have been reported.
