Also, get this.

They're not even sure that all of the rescue miners are out of the mine. The company won't discuss it with the press.

Could be others still in the rubble.

I HOPE that MSHA will now have Murray's ass on a platter, since some of their own have been injured.

36. You know what I'm wondering about Bush?
If he's even taken a break from his vacay to contact his FEMA chief about this hurricane that is about to enter the Gulf.

You know, he can't use the "We've never experienced a natural disaster of this scale before" excuse this time.

7. You would think.
I wish someone could explain to me what is wrong with the world today.

Refinery explosion.

Mine cave-in.

Hurricane about to enter the Gulf.

And that's not even taking into account the past couple of weeks--bridge collapse, original mine collapse...

WTF is going on? If I believed in a higher power, I'd worry that he's very angry with Earth right now.

in this country. They were playing a clip of the head of Mine Safety, whose name I can't remember, that was such a loser that not even the repugs would bring him up for hearing for nomination. He was one of the little King's recess appointments last year.

How come Muray hasn't been out in front of the cameras with his folksy, endearing explanation for this additional disaster? The press just fawns over this bastard, no hard questions, no backstory on just how dangerous this mine was before the first collapse. Dammit, this makes me so angry!

On edit: The guy is the Assistant Secretary of Labor and his name is Stickler, not the head of Mine Safety. Duh.

Other experts? The PA mine did not go like this. They really did listen to everybody about rescue. Is there a blog anywhere that has some expert opinions.

OT, but sort of not, there was a guy from Forbes on MSNBC earlier, about the Chinese toys, - STILL spouting the anti-government line about regulation, and supporting 'the market' being the best line of defense for consumers. What will it take to get our country back.

They just keep using the word bump over and over. the hospital guy did slip and mention head trauma in regards to one of the victims.
I would be shocked if MSHA let them go back in that mine now.

But when a Republican is the owner, it's called a "SEISMIC bump." (In other words, and act of god.)

49. A: Coal Mine Bump ........................
Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 01:29 AM by gbrooks

These reports and documentation on past coal mine bump events were collected by NIOSH and the former U. S. Bureau of Mines.

A coal mine bump, also known as a bounce or burst, is the sudden outbursts of coal and rock that occur when stresses in a coal pillar, left for support in underground workings, cause the pillar to rupture without warning, sending coal and rock flying with explosive force. On the average, two coal miners are seriously injured each year and a miner is killed every other year due to coal bumps. By making these historical bump reports accessible, we hope to inform the industry about bump hazards.

Bump reports are listed by state and are in PDF format. More information about coal mine bumps can be found in the paper:

"Occurrence and Remediation of Coal Mine Bumps: A Historical Review”, in Mechanics and Mitigation of Violent Failure in Coal and Hard-Rock Mines, by A.T. Iannacchione and J.C. Zelanko, U.S. Bureau of Mines Special Publication SP 01-95, 1995, pp. 27-67

If you are aware of any other documented bumps, or have any comments or suggestions, please contact:

John L. Ellenberger, Research Geophysicist
Pittsburgh Research Lab
412-386-6751
JEllenberger@cdc.gov

The recurrance of these bumps at the Murray Mine is an indication that the roof wall of the entire gallery where this is occurring is getting ready to collapse possibly causing a cascading failure of the entire mine.

50. Mine officials using the word "seismic"
at every chance they get. I saw the term "seismic bump." And the MSM, not having science literate reporters, parrot the terminology. Most have reported the USGS explanation of the so-called seismic activity as being the cave-in activity from the mine, but now with this new tragedy, they are again repeating mine official nonsense about seismic activity. When the lawsuits and invesstigations begin, it will be made clear that the pseudo-science of Murray was a cover-up.
