CBS is denying they censored our signs!!
As most of you know, last Friday the CBS Early Show was here in Kansas City and our group was not allowed to appear in their camera shots holding our signs against the war. As soon as we arrived, a CBS staffer came over and told us they had a permit to use the park and they had the right to decide who could come to their event and who could not come and she wanted us to leave. We asked to see the permit and the CBS lady left and returned with a cop who put us in a free speech zone and then later handcuffed a member of our group who took her OUT OF IRAQ NOW sign into the 'forbidden' area.

A local radio show host interviewed the woman who was handcuffed and then called CBS for a statement and their spokeswoman DENIED that we were not allowed to be on their show! She said CBS does not censure political signs. She then asked how we even knew that the woman who asked us to leave worked for CBS!!!

Well I saw her nametag that clearly said 'CBS'!!! (No I didn't take a picture of her nametag.) So we know for a fact that CBS asked us to leave a public park because of our political signs.

Signs they DID allow on the air included

GO NAVY

SAVE A HORSE, RIDE A COWBOY

Here's what I need. I searched the CBS website and could not find an email address to write to CBS. I want them DELUGED with letters shaming them for censoring us and our signs. YES, they did try to make us leave a public park and yes, one of us was threatened with arrest. And now they are denying this censorship even happened!!

I do have pictures of the woman being handcuffed. I also wrote a letter to the editor of our local paper and they did call me to verify and said my letter should be in the paper in the next week or 10 days.

Please, if you have time, contact CBS and tell them the media is NOT supposed to control the message.

Thanks for your help!!

It goes straight downhill from there, eventually reaching Pirate Master and finally Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News.

8. What is it with law enforcement officers in this country. Are they so simple minded that they
act instinctively to obey their corporate masters? Just once I'd like to hear about one of these idiots telling some corp asshole that this is still America and as of 8/17/07 at 9:50 EDT, the 1st Admentment had not been abolished. Is it that most cops are dimwitted to begin with or are they born fuckheads?

My letter of Complaint:

Why are you having people arrested in Kansas for holding up signs against the war???

You disgust me!!! The American public wants the truth!!

I thought CBS Cares?? :sarcasm: What a crock!!

http://www.cbs.com/cbs_cares/ :eyes:

Development of CBS Cares is supervised by the Program Practices Department in New York,
which works with the Promotions Department. With Network PSAs as its fulcrum, CBS Cares has
grown into a multimedia project involving many areas and talents at CBS: Entertainment, News,
Sports, Digital Media, Radio, CBS Outdoor, Communications and Marketing. While there are some
core causes that have been addressed for years, CBS Cares is also committed to looking for
under-served causes where we believe that the resources and talents within CBS can make a
difference. The starting point for every PSA--before scripting begins--is close
consultation with experts on the frontline of each field to learn what messages they feel
are the most important to convey.

23. My email to CBS
I am writing to object to the censorship CBS engaged in while in Kansas City filming The Early Show on Aug 10. A CBS spokeswoman is now denying we were asked to leave the event!! One of the members of our group was placed in handcuffs by KCMO cops, who asked her to leave - at the request of CBS!!! Our signs were opposing the war in Iraq. Why were signs promoting the Navy and the war in Iraq 'appropriate' but ours against the war were not?

CBS should be ashamed. It is not the media's job to control the message!!!

We have pictures. PLEASE quit denying this happened!! CBS CENSORED US AND ASKED US TO LEAVE! That is bad enough, but claiming this never happened is even worse!!

28. Slowly, all off Amerika becomes Bushified...BushPutinized. It is grotesque.
And an affront to the nation we were (yes, I am well aware we did some very bad things, but less than most nations, and more good to counteract the bad...but that was long ago).

Middle-Phase Transition from a Free Nation to the New Totalitarian Tyranny, or Kinder and Gentler Nazism, as I like to call it, means that our personal lives begin to be impacted, and that a substantial number of Imperial Subjects now accept their role and will do so much more bad and even evil actions (though paling still, next to old-style Nazi/Soviet evil, Thank God for us) in the service of that than in the service of a Free Nation such as we were before 12/12/2000.

and signs for impeachment to The Today Show and Good Morning America. Network security removed them and threatened to have them arrested if they came back.

I heard about another guy who went to The Early Show when they were taping in Dallas with a sign opposing the war and he was threatened with arrest if he didn't leave.

You bet they control the message. Bastards.

They also allowed a sign that said GO NAVY and another one that said OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

But OUT OF IRAQ NOW does not meet their standards.

Then they lied about what happened. That's what makes me the angriest about all of this. We more or less expected to get hassled for our signs. But for CBS to turn around a week later and claim they didn't tell us we couldn't have our signs at their event? That is just infuriating.

65. Here is why CBS kisses * hiney. Viacom has been breaking the law since 2000
Viacom is the parent company of CBS. Since before Bush took office, back in 2000, they were told that they would have to divest some of their TV holdings because they own more than the allowed limit by federal law. They were given a time limit. Instead of obeying the law, they decided to hitch their wagon to Karl Rove, who promised relaxation of federal media ownership rules if Bush was elected. Lots of corporate media types participated in farces like "Gore is a liar" and the myth that democracy was in action in Florida 2000.

However, Congress would never make Viacom's holdings legal, so the administration attempted to do it by administrative decree. The decree was challenged in court and struck down. In the fall of 2004, Karl Rove swore to the corporate media that the Bush administration was going to challenge the court ruling all the way to the SCOTUS and get the decree back as law. In the meantime, Viacom was severely out of compliance with the law. At anytime, the FCC could drop the hammer and tell it to start selling off TV holdings.

By some not so strange coincidence, when Dan Rather and Mary Mapes started making bothers of themselves in 2004 first with Abu Ghraib and then with Bush AWOL, CBS decided to throw its star anchor and its ace producer to the wolves in order to curry administration favor---and maybe keep the FCC off its back. It would have hurt to sell off those TV holdings.

In January, 2005, after Bush was safely sworn in for a second term, Michael Powell, FCC chair announced that the Bush administration had lied, it had never intended to take the case to the SCOTUS, the whole issue of relaxed media ownership was dead. That meant that Viacom would stay out of compliance with federal media ownership laws FOREVER.

So, if you are CBS, are you going to avoid the wrath of the Bush FCC and keep war protesters off your news show? Are you going to do whatever it takes to get another Republican in the WH in 2008, knowing that a Democrat may enforce the federal media ownership rules that the Bush administration has not been enforcing for 8 years? Are you going to turn your investigative news department--the one that broke the Abu Ghraib story--into a joke?

Sure you are.

70. What I would like to see
What I would like to see is a Supreme Court decision declaring so-called 'free speech zones' as an abridgment of the peoples right to free speech and illegal. Not likely to happen with the current court but we could hope. If we can only exercise our free speech in areas the government designates how is that free speech at all. Its amazing that people giving massive amounts of money to politicians is 'free speech' that must be strongly protected but protesting in the streets and carrying signs gets you threatened and/or actually arrested.

71. Thanks for all you do.
Have you tried to get a copy of the permit?
It should be public record.
I would like to read the permit and the ordinance forming the free speech zone.
Please send me a message if you can get a copy.
Thanks.

80. Hate to play devil's advocate but please be advised,
that the First Amendment doesn't apply to this situation since CBS is not the government. And that there is no violation to FCC regulations. Just like alot of places where there is publicity, and entertainment, it happens. Well, except the woman in cuffs which I think she should sue the city and the arresting officers for millions (accept no less).

The only way to do something about it is to elect new city officials that allowed CBS to get a permit. It's not just CBS' fault, it's the ones that gave them the permit.
