Question: "Rescue workers" or fellow miners? |
|
During last night's MSNBC coverage of the second Utah mining disaster, someone who was interviewed mentioned -- and there was no follow-up at the time from Dan Abrams -- that the rescuers in the mine were not a professional team of rescuers, but fellow miners. Can someone who knows more about this, tell us whether there are such professional teams for the purpose of rescuing miners trapped after mining accidents. And if there are, why were fellow miners doing this job in Utah? Was it familiarity with the mine? Did the miners ask to do the job? Or were professionals simply not called?

1. Each mine has an elite group of miners who are trained in mine rescue. |
|
They receive special training and hold competitions in order to gain as much skill as possible in many different scenarios. I've worked in the mines all my life and I am very sad today.

4. Ah, that would answer the question -- although the comments by the interviewee... |
|
are still unclear, regarding this particular case. Do you think the guys who've been down there as rescuers are that mine's trained group?

2. doesn't it burn you that the cable news 'reporters' only give 10% of the facts? |
|
The follow-up question is dead! It's as if a prerequisite of tv journalism is a complete lack of curiosity!
I only give these folks another 5 years or so before they're replaced with avatars. Machines are quite incurious.

3. I read on here when this first happened, Murray turned away the rescue teams that flew in to help. |

5. Well, that would be an interesting topic for more discussion in the media, wouldn't it? |

6. One of them was the UMW group considered the best rescue team in the country. |
|
Murray just wants to ensure that no outsiders get a look at the inside of his mine, and that none of the trapped miners survive to testify.
So far, looks like he's been allowed to succeed on both fronts.
