It's official. We now live in 1984
“Specially trained security personnel” will be watching passengers for “micro-expressions” that will reveal treacherous agendas and insidious intentions at airports around the country. These agents, who may literally hold your fate in their hands have been given a lofty, Orwellian name: "Behavior Detection Officers."

In the study of “micro-expressions”—yes, it is actually a field of study and there are some who are arrogant enough to call it a science—it has been decided that when people wish to conceal emotions, the truth of their feelings is revealed in facial flashes. These experts have determined that fear and disgust are the key things to look for because they can hint of deception.

29. Use of spysats in domestic surveillance, in the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/17/us/17spy.html?th&emc=th

It won't be long before they're using those multispectral imagers to look for the spectral signature of pot patches and the heat signature of household grow lamps, in addition to looking for "terrorists."

I wonder if that proposal included the SIGINT birds, or just the imaging sats?

59. How would they interpret Cheney's ugly sneer? Or the BoyKing's perpetual smirk?
I suppose THOSE annoying expressions would pass muster because they're attached to fascist faces.

I wonder how my bawling episode at the Phoenix airport in June would have been interpreted? I was upset because I was trying to get home to see my dying cat and the plane kept getting delayed again and again, and I just lost it. Were these the tears of a terrorist? No - the tears of a loving cat mom who wanted to see her kitty before he died.

16. Phrenology for the New Dark Ages (and the New Totalitarianism)
Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 10:47 AM by tom_paine
The new Fingermen. The new Blackshirts. The New KGB.

Oh no, no such thing, especially in these stressful days, of people carrying around a burden of pain or loss in their hearts from the death of a loved one or a catastrophe causing "micro-expressions" of fear and disgust.

:sarcasm:

Yes it is madness. Yes we are very very close to 1984.

Yes, the Middle Phase of Tranistion to the New Bushputinist Totalitarianism is upon us.

Creepy and getting creepier.

Hey, if history is any judge, creepy Male Behavior Detection Officers (and given the new semi-equality, probably some creepy Female Behavior Detection Officers) will probably be able to extrort some very good sex from some very attractive people. Probbaly not 50 years away.

All the old poisons and venalities of the human race will eventually out as Amerika falls, I think (though I pray daily that I am wrong).

26. Sex for not getting thrown in jail?
I'd be surprised if that isn't official policy in 2 years.

I was just discussing with a friend of mine who has kids in school. You hear every so often about strip searches being conducted on girls in school for suspicion of wrongdoing. If martial law comes, schools will have police in house all the time, and I'd lay money on random strip searches of girls becoming a regular thing, if not more :puke:

I'm SO glad we live in the "Greatest nation on Earth!" It's such a privilege! :sarcasm:

Facial Expressions Test

I'm not 100% sure if these methods are applicable- there seems to be a heck of a lot of "interpretation". I'm not sure if the training provided would be adequate. After all, most of these people who are going to be performing the examinations are probably going to be paid minimum wage.

44. As a person with three different neurological conditions..
I recently participated in a U of Ore study about traveling while disabled. Basically I haven't used interstate transportation since 911. Anyway they had a comments section and I told them "I would be really stupid to attempt to use interstate transportation since the policies put in place by 911. I feel I am at risk physically, emotionally and medically by those policies." The story about the Minister in Florida left at the curb for three days by airline personnel was the exact thing I expected to happen.

It wasn't that great before 911. I watched a PCA wrench his back getting a quadriplegic into a coach airline seat. They had booked bulkhead seats and were refused at boarding. The flight attendant was very impatient with the slowness of the process and went and got the Captain who (after they were seated) offered to let them move to the bulkhead seats (protecting his ass I assume). Turned my stomach. A former ball player got thrown thrown off a plane for attempting to intervene when a flight attendant was doing the same thing to another passenger so I assume it was SOP. Harass us so that we don't fly and get in their way.

52. That is too creepy and unscientific. Why not phrenology?

Fear? Most people feel a little fear when about to climb into a giant metal tube to fly through the sky, since those things crash and burn rather spectacularly from time to time.

Then there's fear of being on the no fly list, fear of inappropriate searches, and now, fear of being accused of looking suspicious.

Disgust? Maybe people are a little disgusted when they are paying to be jammed into tiny seats with no legroom, knowing how unpleasant the bathrooms are, how bad the food usually is, if you get food at all.

But people may also look disgusted because their feet hurt or they had a fight with their spouse or a zillion other reasons.

We haven't flown since 9/11 and don't intend to fly again as long as this country is so paranoid. Europe and the UK have had good security for many years, without all this inconvenience to people. The US has gone bonkers.
