rethugs want a statue of Reagan in the U.S. Capitol...
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/08/17/deck-the-halls-with-ronald-reagan/

Deck the halls with Ronald Reagan.

During a visit to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told former first lady Nancy Reagan “that he is working with other senators who want to erect a statue of President Reagan” in the U.S. Capitol. “There could be no more fitting recognition than to welcome his likeness to the halls of Congress,’” McConnell told Mrs. Reagan. Ironically, Reagan never actually served in Congress.

Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 11:25 AM by BurtWorm
If he's one of many who never served in Congress, I guess it's okay. But if he'd be unique, then definitely not okay.

20. You have it right on!
Don`t know if I would have used your choice of words, but your post does capture the how I feel about this ! He was lousy as a gov, unless you were southern cal rich. But, as a pres he was a total tool. He was an actor for god`s sake. Of course he looked good in front of the cameras, and yes he could turn a phrase, but that was part of his trade. The pubs have always disparaged "Hollywood", until they had a two bit actor they knew they could USE. Now they have another two bit actor they want to crown. So, I guess, it`s just the dem side of hollywood that they hate.

11. Remember when they wanted him on a dime?
Remember a couple of years ago when the Republicans wanted to put Reagan's face on a dime? Not just any amount of money, but a dime. Meaning they specifically wanted to knock FDR and the New Deal out and replace it with Reagan's sick sense of laissez faire corporatism? That was no coincidence.

42. The irony was....
Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 12:24 PM by PeterU
The irony was Republicans didn't even bother to figure out why FDR was specifically on the dime, i.e. his start of the March of Dimes campaign.

Of course, Republicans know no irony. You are talking about people whose hero didn't even bother to listen to the actual lyrics of "Born in the USA" before he attempted to appropriate it as his campaign song.

13. A simple rule for statues of presidents:
The size of the statue should be proportional to the surplus left in government coffers when they left office. Thus, Slick Willie gets a 200-foot statue. Reagan gets a 50-foot hole in the ground, with guard rails around the edges. Little Lord Pissypants will get a chasm to rival the Grand Canyon.

15. There was actual legislation to MAKE localities erect a statue of Regan
In fact there was a website for this "cause"

Gladly it didn't go through but it would have been a great monument to unfunded mandates-an Reagan staple like "Reagan National" was to DC and the Metro

Here is an 2000 article about a monument on the national mall

If they pay for with pure private money and place it on pure private land in Washington DC than they can have it. Reagan was the father of the Ownership society so I can't see how he would approve of wasting tax money on such a project.

40. Did they say WHERE they wanted the statue placed?
I'm all for this, so long as they build it to MY specifications:

1. In a Republicans-only men's room so decent people don't have to look at it.
2. Standing next to the line of urinals, holding a bucket.
3. The bucket is connected to the sewer system, and there's a water line running into it.
4. The flush handle is shaped like his penis, and it's in the right place. But you'd have to make it out of some foul-tasting substance lest the Republicans attempt to fellate the statue.

Yes, it will be Ronnie's last, and best, role: Piss Boy.

45. Fine with me...
As long as it depicts him as The Grim Reaper, surrounded by poor starving kids sucking on ketchup bottles for nourishment, with the names of the 241 Marines killed in Beirut in 1983 etched into the blade of his scythe.

Rotten bastard. His main contributions to US society were making it acceptable to piss on the poor and launching the first serious attack on social programs that involved shifting their funding to the pentagon.

His acolytes learned well; many of them are now in key positions with BushCo, doing the same sneaky underhanded shit, screwing the same social classes, using military spending to cripple social programs.

And now that elections are optional, and their integrity in serious doubt, we'll probably continue to recycle these vipers through several generations until the only things recognizable about the US will be baseball (but the teams won't represent cities anymore; just corporations), and faded, tattered little bits of flags and yellow ribbons flying from the older rat cars that still use external antennas.

47. There is no bigger dropping than a statue of Reagan
But of course, there is no bigger hero to them than
an actor whose military career during a hot war was
to serve as military liason to Hollywood, and then
as president invade a Caribbean island about as big
as Nantucket.

There's the Republican ideal of courage for you.

No wonder people in Washington still refer to DCA as
"National Airport," and only out-of-towners under the
age of 30 actually call it "Reagan."
