To all you DU Cyclists out there:
I just got this from one of our local clubs and though I'd pass it along so everyone can dope-slap Shrub's Secretary of Transportation:

Take Action Now

League Responds to U.S. Transportation Secretary's comments on PBS

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters talks about infrastructure problems and travel initiatives. More Info

Peters cited "bicycle paths" as a prime example of the waste

Last night on the PBS NewsHour with Jim Leher, DOT Secretary Mary Peters was interviewed by Gwen Ifill.

Peters, when asked about a possible gas tax increase, repeated President Bush's response - No, there can be no tax increase because Congress is wasting the money they already get. Peters cited "bicycle paths" as a prime example of the waste because bicycles are not a transportation use of the gas tax money.

It is disappointing that the administration is attacking Jim Oberstar for his efforts to get the Minneapolis bridge repaired along with raising all the funding for transportation maintenance, by using Oberstar's support for bicycles as a weapon.

The League of American Bicyclists feels strongly that this should not go without a response and we have sent a letter to Secretary Peters voicing our view. Click here to view our response.

For those of you who feel strongly about bicycling issues, we would also urge you to contact the Secretary to share your personal viewpoints. http://capwiz.com/lab/issues/alert/?alertid=10193871&type=cu

2. Build them, and they just might use them.
It's an addiction. An addiction to comfort.

I was challenged many years ago to get out of my vehicle. I was already an avid cyclist, and yet even I was still driving. It was just a five mile commute. I tried it. And I never went back. Rain or shine.

Having grown up in Palo Alto, I saw one of the first town's to convert to bike paths. It does take some effort. But how much, I can't really quantify. The biggest is lane widths, I believe. Other than that it's concrete saws to make ramps at the curbs for intersections. It's not simple. But the bottom line now is that I drive when I could be riding, because I don't want to "fight" the other people in their cars.

This is a big source of anguish for me. I want to ride so badly, and American society won't let me. I refuse to do battle with tons of steel being piloted by _______.

3. My Raleigh thanks you for the links.
I just got back from an errand that had me cycling and I traveled on a road with little or no room outside the white lines.

I admit I must make quite a sight riding my Raleigh(proudly made in the U.S.A.), with a Rubbermaid container attached to the rear carrier and a Democratic Underground 'bumper sticker' slapped on the rear of that carrier.

K&R

4. I hear ya. Out my way
we don't even get the white line - the pavement just ends and the crushed stone shoulder begins. Having landed in said crushed stone - I can say with confidence that it hurts like a sum'bitch...

Oh - and I wouldn't dare temp the rednecks of Hanover and Goochland counties by putting a DU bumper sticker on the bike... Bad for your health...
