At this point, this country has two paths. One path (Gore runs) and we have
hope for the future and some sense of peace that our Constitution, our democracy,
our civil rights and our standing in the world can be restored. The next path
(Gore does not run) is that we continue down this sick, anti-American, Fascist
road where we lose absolutely everything and enter a very dark time.

The sun is starting to set, the lights are going dim and things are looking
pretty bleak.

However, Al Gore is the spark that can turn it all around and restore this
nation for us and for future generations.

Several months ago, my retired physicist/astronomer dad mentioned that he liked Biden. I didn't say much (but I think my face looked like this: x( ).

I sent him the link to the video of Al Gore's 1/16/2006 MLK Day speech, "The Rule of Law". He called me the next day and said, "By his own words, HE MUST RUN."

Guess who was at the bookstore at opening time the day 'The Assault on Reason' came out! (He arrived a day early, so had to go there twice) He bought one for himself and one for me as a surprise.

It took him about a week and a half or so to read it, he said, because "There is so much in there to reflect upon, I have to set it down to think and reflect."

I have not heard any 'Biden' (or anybody else) from him since. Only Gore.

If you have not seen this speech, you MUST. One of the most important speeches in decades, I think. Al Gore GETS IT ALL.

Beyond the usual soundbites and pleading, where is the backing of this man's work now? Even after his statement about civil disobedience and questioning why people aren't standing in rings around bulldozers, who will stand in those rings around bulldozers based on the merits of this planet being forever changed by our own behavior now? I don't really want to be a downer either, but he is calling on us and it doesn't seem like those only infatuated with him care to listen.

I guess it really is too boring to discuss solutions or boycotts, or other forms of civil disobedience that WE should be doing in response to his call to us, so this is what we have. And should he not run in this cycle which I don't think he will do either, what then? Will the lovey dovey posts end? Will there still be the level of support for this man and his important work for our planet if he doesn't do what certain people want him to do? Will people stand at the barricades for this planet with him regardless of his address? And what of now? Are people simply sitting and waiting for him to tell them what they want to hear? Is taking action on the climate crisis just not worthwhile unless there is political hype attached to it?

137. Well actually, it's an embarrassment

that as urgent as the climate crisis is - and I believe it is if anything worse than thought - if we do not regain control of this country, get it back in the hands of "We the People", then no amount of blocking bulldozers is going to change things. The big corporations, primarily energy and transportation, but all who have the same attitude toward the planet as the coal operator had toward safety (it cuts into profits), will just have their gendarmes haul us away and go on their way. We will just be "eco terrorists" and the next Kent State won't bring any reaction from the authorities other than "why did you stop at four?"

In a war, you secure the beachhead, then break out into the countryside. We had at least a toe on the beach eight years ago. Gore was frustrated then by Kyoto and other setbacks, but was at least working on it. But we got pushed back offshore, and need to get a position of strength from which to fight the big battles. To his eternal credit, what Gore did was get oh-so-much better armed to fight the war and that is good. I agree that the more vocal and visible we all are, the more lip service the powers that be will pay. And that will be a start. But it won't do it. We need leadership from the top in the government. We need to regain that beachhead. Remember the expression they used to use a few decades back when there was a crippling strike? Jawboning. When a rail or air or steel strike had gone on long enough to be really impacting the economy, the president would summon the leaders to the WH and "jawbone." Give them a tongue lashing, get them to settle.

Well, when we have industries fighting green measures, sending their lobbyists to jawbone congress to leave them alone, the President should be jawboning THEM to get in line. The president can be appealling to the American people - We the People" to tell Congress what we want. He can use the bully pulpit to great advantage. He has become a master of that. He can get air time any time he wants. Even if not live, he can make statements that show up on the evening news. Why does the "weekly radio address' havee to be just weekly, just radio?

If we don't have that president, don't have that beachhead, I fear those of us who commend Gore for his great efforts and accomplishments will be with him on the outside looking in, with the occasional pail of garbage thrown out the window in our faces.

164. You won't do that without toppling the military industiral complex

And that sure isn't going to happen with just picture montages and pleas that appeal to emotionalism over reason. You don't go to the barricades for this planet now and topple that military industrial complex that has firm control over the system you are calling him to go back to, you have nothing else. To me it is as simple as that and as complex as that all at once. Begging people to run for an office already toxified by corruption and greed is not the way to get the government we deserve now. It has already been tried and proven to be a dead end. It can then can only happen if you go out of your comfort zone to do it.

That is what I believe Al Gore has been saying for months through his books, his speeches, and his actions. And ever since I read that he posed the question as to why people aren't in rings protesting I have been thinking of what my first act of peaceful civil disobedience will be... for today, it will be handing out flyers telling people to boycott EXXON and other companies that pollute this planet for profit. It is easy enough to do and I don't put myself in danger of being arrested as handing out flyers as I walk is something that doesn't require a permit and it still gets the word out. Next I may stand outside a tv station asking for truth regarding this climate crisis and in not downplaying the danger of it. I already managed to get a big local paper to do a report on being prepared for when the big hurricane hits here and what we now need to do as citizens to lighten our carbon footprint due to my many letters to my City Council which is doing something about it. From there, I don't know. But I do know this, that up until now doing things the status quo usual way regarding our environment has not done a damn thing to ensure that the CEO of America and the Congress isn't bought in some way regarding ignoring it, and there is no denying that this system has the temptation with it to make any who enter it just as apathetic to it, and Mr. Gore is not a man who wants that temptation. Thirty years of apathy has done too much damage to this planet.

I then must disagree with you (but do thank you for your civility to me) and state that Al Gore has it right now. Without the people out here being told the truth, and being educated, and being empowered, and being outraged, and going to those barrcades now in whatever way they feel they must do so peacefully, it isn't going to matter who you place as CEO of America. And that is not going to happen by mid September of this year so in my view the fantasy of him running in a toxic system that has not changed one iota with a populace that couldn't even go to those barricades for him in 2000 when it mattered most seems very unreasoned. So I choose to live in the reality of the moment especially after reading The Assault On Reason, and not give into ads or even posts like this OP which only appeals to emotionalism and not reason.

And there is no more crucial an issue right now than the sustainability of this planet. Mr. Gore knows that, I know that, and so do many others, and I support that mission and global grassroots effort with him at the helm wholeheartedly because I believe it is the only way to bring back Democracy to this country and to ensure that our children will have a brighter future. Him running in this toxic system does not ensure that yet, and as he stated it is about that truth being brought to all sides in this struggle for survival, it isn't about him. In my view, you can't have the world you want if you don't go to the barricades for it. And that is exactly what I intend to do for my child, for my planet, and for Mr. Gore because I respect his words and support him, not a notion.

then in operations.....when pissy pants came to Chicago to speak to the airline employees of United and American..and we all knew he was nothing but a liar and blowing smoke up asses..and it was a damn photo opp..and all of us just walked away when he was talking..because we all knew it was nothing but bullshit..

those were our dead co-workers and all that sob cared about was a damn photo op....

i knew..i knew i had to find answers...and there began my journey...it was a loney journey then..now i and others have so much company, it is touching to the heart...

I know today ..in my heart and soul..there is only one person to lead us out of this mess and to restore our democracy where it should be..and to lead us to truth...

and that person is Al Gore..of that i have not one ounce of doubt!! whenever evil has surfaced on earth there have been great leaders to lead the way to truth and honesty..i believe Al Gore is the man.

Just because one doesn't post multiple times a day doesn't mean that they have just joined... Just saying.

Many of the more prolific DU posters don't have much to contribute.

I prefer to read stimulating posts that contain original thinking or non-conventional wisdom.

Both Tipper and Al Gores' once enthusiastic willingness to censor music lyrics still troubles me.

Al has come a long ways since 2000. I fear that he is just not vicious and greedy enough to thrive politically today.

Hopefully if he does end up running he will hang tough until ALL of the votes are counted correctly/accurately.

I definitely could support Gore now compared to many of the other potential 2008 Democratic presidential candidates.
