'Law & Order' star: I'll ban abortion
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) – Likely Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson told CNN Friday that he plans to enter the race for the White House “shortly.”

“We are going to be getting in if we get in, and of course, we are in the testing the waters phase,” he said, adding, “we’re going to be making a statement shortly that will cure all of that. But yeah, we’ll be in traditionally when people get in this race,” he told CNN’s John King in an interview Friday.

Showing his conservative stripes, Thompson said he would push for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and would overturn Roe v. Wade.

“I don’t think that one state ought to be able to pass a law requiring gay marriage or allowing gay marriage and have another state be required to follow along,” Thompson explained. Thompson said that the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion “was bad law and bad medicine.”

13. Just a little technicality - Overturning R v W is not the same as banning abortion
Edited on Fri Aug-17-07 03:30 PM by slackmaster
You may now continue roasting DA Arthur Branch over the coals, which he deserves.

Oh, another technicality:

Roe v Wade did not legalize abortion. The anti-choicers are pushing a false premise that abortion had always been illegal everywhere before 1973. The truth is far more complex. It was already legal in many states. We had a patchwork of laws. Roe v Wade set a line in the sand limiting states' ability to regulate abortion.

Constitution.

States' rights refers to the idea, in U.S. politics and constitutional law, that U.S. states possess certain rights and political powers in relation to the federal government. A commonly cited source for states' rights is the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution, which is part of the Bill of Rights. The states' rights concept is usually used to defend a state law that the federal government seeks to override, or to oppose a perceived violation by the federal government of the bounds of federal authority.

So, I suggest you ask Mr. Thompson the latter question if he's that committed to overturning Roe, and ask him how he feels about killing civilians during the Iraq war?

about threats to your freedom, equality, and personal autonomy. after all, all we kindly menfolk want to do is to save you from a 'despicable practice'. you know, because when you're pregnant and all, you are just incapable of being able to make your own decisions about your own life, health, body, family, etc etc etc etc."

anyone who cares to condescend in the manner you did, and who has the nerve to call my Constitutionally-protected right to reproductive health care and my right to privacy in my health care choices "despicable"... well, i might think anyone like that who makes the effort to post on this site might be a troll, mole, or both.

45. It's folks like you
who will blow yet another election for us. If you are as old as you claim, then you should be smart enough to know that the President will never be able to ban abortion. Even with a "Full House" on Capitol Hill, abortion is still legal. So while you go on rending and tearing your clothes over something that clearly won't happen, how about burning some of that righteous energy of yours on issues that MIGHT actually HELP us this time around? Start shouting about the issues we need shouted about. Or are you planning on helping the bastards yet again?

And in case you didn't get the memo, not all solid Democratic voters believe in abortion on demand. That damn sure doesn't make us trolls or moles, so get over yourself and do something constructive for the party.

There are lots of democrats who are more than willing to trade women's rights for their own self-serving interests. Same for gay rights, immigrant rights, worker's rights, and the rights of anyone who ain't white and male.

59. how disingenuous!
it is a FACT that women's right to privacy in medical care is being decimated at every level, local, state and federal. your position presumes that women's right to privacy in medical care is strong and safe in every county in every state, and that the recent SCOTUS decision never happened.

"clearly won't happen"? tell that to the women who live in the 87% of US counties that have NO facility where she can exercise her constitutional right to privacy in her medical care choices. tell that to the women in Mississippi and South Dakota.

men would not stand to be treated like this. you have no interest in "helping us this time around". you think my anger about repressive forced-birth laws, and the codifying of religious superstition into oppressive laws against women, is frivolous.

"get over yourself and do something constructive for the party" aside from sounding downright Stalinistic, may i remind you that "myself" is over 50% of "the party".

male entitlement at the cost of others who are "lesser than"... one of the problems at the core of many of the issues we are suffering worldwide today. and your solution is for more than half of registered Democrats to shut up about what you have decided is a petty little problem not worth your time.
:wtf: and :puke:

67. What's "abortion on demand"?
I hear right-wing backwards conservatives use that phrase all the time and I've never understood what it means. You mean a woman can walk in, 9 months pregnant, into a clinic and 15 minutes later, bam, she has an abortion? Is that what "abortion on demand" is? Please clarify, since you seem to be so well versed in Republican talking points. Thanks.

66. You call it getting worked up
I say that those of us who object to his sentiment are simply making an answer to his original statement. Does it mean nothing to the general conversation in this country about abortion that a man who wants the republican presidential nomination states publicly that if he could, he'd ban abortion? I say not, and as someone who supports keeping abortion on demand legal, I say that making a public response to this man's statement is necessary. And while no president (under current levels of power, anyway) can criminalize abortion by fiat, can you really say that any president's position on the matter has no bearing on how emboldened those who seek criminalizing abortion become? Those phone calls of support republican presidents make to anti-choice groups who gather on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade mean a great deal to those folks.

He now has no chance.

And BTW, what does "he would overturn Roe v Wade" mean? Does he understand that there is a judicial branch of the federal government?

55. A law "requiring" gay marriage?
Is someone pushing a law requiring us to get married to people of the same sex? That's news to me.

What an ass.

57. He has a point with marriage laws
they really should be the same in every state. It really would cut down on discrimination. So... civil unions for all. Marriage for none!

63. No, he doesn't...
I live in MA...No state is required to accept our marriage equality. The only states that do so are states that already have civil unions or those that do not have any specific ban on same sex marriage.

And, he wants to ban it outright, across the board...Do you really agree with that bigoted position?

58. Well, so much for gaining any of the independant or moderate votes in the general election.
Always nice to see a conservative lose an election in a landslide before the asshole has even officially entered the race.

69. Dear Larry Flynt: can you please investigate his sexual insecurity?
Edited on Sun Aug-19-07 04:18 AM by quantessd
Thank you, Larry Flynt, for exposing David Vitter-R, Louisiana, for his solicitation of diaper sex with prostitutes. You have given me hours of laughter.

I eagerly await your next expose' of a hypocrite!
