Nobel prizes to be announced October 8-15

Agence France-Presse

STOCKHOLM - The 2007 Nobel prizes will be announced between October 8 and 15, the Nobel Foundation said Friday, with former US vice president Al Gore, a Canadian Inuit and Bolivia's president in the running for the peace prize.

The peace prize, the most celebrated of the Nobel honors, will be announced on October 12 in Oslo by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The names of the nominees are a closely-guarded secret, but those who submit nominations are allowed to disclose their choice. The list for the peace prize is also known to comprise the names of 181 individuals and organizations.

With climate change high on the international agenda, one likely contender is Gore, whose film "An Inconvenient Truth" warns of the dangers of global warming.

Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a Canadian who represents more than 150,000 fellow Inuits in the Inuit Circumpolar Conference and who has campaigned to draw attention to climate change in the Arctic, is another possible candidate.

Each Nobel prize this year will carry a prize sum of 10 million Swedish kronor (1.42 million dollars, 1.06 million euros), to be shared if the prize is awarded to more than one laureate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wish Mr. Gore the best of luck, but hope he can share this prize with Sheila Watt -Cloutier because of her important and sincere work with the Inuit people who are already feeling the effects of the climate crisis. To see environmentalists of their caliber win and share this prize would send a great message to the world. A man I have respected for so long has finally reached the pinnacle of who he always was. To see him awarded this prize for work on an issue that has always been close to his heart will be very emotional, because it is a prize being given to all of those in spirit in search of truth, and to those who have not let the fates dictate to them the road they will travel in their quest for peace. Environmentalism and peace go hand in hand, and at this juncture in our world history it is most crucial that we recognize this. And I hope the Nobel committee does so, because in the case of Mr. Gore and Ms. Watt-Cloutier, that recognition is well deserved.
This would give Gore the Trifecta. He should then proceed directly to the White House without passing go.
4. That's not what this is about
It isn't just a trophy to be used for a political agenda.
9. Oh please
The spirit of the Nobel Prize is what this is about, not the same tired rote political soundbites. So should Sheila Watt-Cloutier win what should she run for?
8. No matter,
It's still a big feather in his hat! What a great thing to add to one's set of accomplishments! Have we ever had a nobel prize winner running or in the WH?
3. Al Gore and his environmental campaign are winners no matter who
wins the Nobel Peace Prize, but I do hope that he is awarded this ultimate prize for his genuine and very time-consuming and time-sensitive campaign to save the earth and its creatures from extinction. What possible cause is more worthy?
