...I'm from Iowa, and there was non-stop coverage when Kerry met with voters
at a local bar in Cedar Rapids. The big story was that he was quoting Tolstoy,
and this reflected his elitism and inability to communicate on a level to which
the average person could relate.

That story--and the point made in that story--got tons of mileage. Moreover,
that story was used to juxtapose Junior against Kerry, putting Junior in a positive
light and cementing the following message in the minds of untold voters:

"Look at Bush! He's the kinda guy that ya just want to have a beer with! Look
at Kerry. He's quoting Tolstoy with the Cedar Rapidians. He's an upper-crust
intellectual who doesn't understand the working man".

You can bet...if Kerry had Gucci loafers on, it would have been mentioned--and it
would have been discussed incessantly on Rush Limbaugh and Hannity. Limbaugh
would have hired someone to write a song parody about it, and probably sold
t-shirts on his Web site--depicting Kerry in Gucci loafers. Endless cartoons
would follow.

We won't see anything when a Republican does this though. They could wear
ruby-encrusted crowns and carry gold scepters to pancake breakfasts in Iowa
--and the media would ignore it.
