Saddam's daughter now faces charges

BAGHDAD — Less than a year after her father was sent to the gallows, Saddam Hussein's daughter is facing charges that could lead to her execution.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior said Friday that Raghad Hussein, 38, has been charged with financing the insurgents who have bedeviled this country since shortly after her father's regime was toppled in 2003.

Hussein is believed to be living in Amman, Jordan, as a guest of King Abdullah II.

The spokesman, Abdul Kereem Khalaf, said the Iraqi Judicial Authority issued an arrest warrant for Hussein a year ago, but that it was being made public only now after Interpol, the international police agency, issued a worldwide notice that Iraq was seeking her.

5. I'm sorry, I don't confuse 'responsibility' with 'want'.

Just because Bush's responsible for it based on your reading of Geneva doesn't mean that everything that the Iraqi government does or conceives is something Bush WANTS. That's a rather disturbing leap of logic. And that's even if you're correct in your reading of Geneva. There's the little matter of various UN resolutions recognizing the present Iraqi government; best as I can see it, Iraq doesn't require the US' permission, or anyone else's, to petition Interpol for aid for enforcing an international arrest warrant.

The League of Nations was an international organization founded as a result of the Paris Peace Conference in 1919–1920. The League's goals included disarmament, preventing war through collective security, settling disputes between countries through negotiation, diplomacy and improving global welfare. The diplomatic philosophy behind the League represented a fundamental shift in thought from the preceding hundred years. The League lacked an armed force of its own and so depended on the Great Powers to enforce its resolutions, keep to economic sanctions which the League ordered, or provide an army, when needed, for the League to use. However, they were often very reluctant to do so. Benito Mussolini stated that “The League is very well when sparrows shout, but no good at all when eagles fall out.”

After a number of notable successes and some early failures in the 1920s, the League ultimately proved incapable of preventing aggression by the Axis Powers in the 1930s. The onset of the Second World War suggested that the League had failed in its primary purpose — to avoid any future world war. The United Nations Organization replaced it after the end of the war and inherited a number of agencies and organizations founded by the League.

I view cherry picking of international law to be mistaken, but my original reply was too sharp, and not sufficiently respectful of the sentiments behind your views. I just think that as a matter of international law, you're in error. The technicalities aren't really that important here. A dubious international arrest warrant is dubious no matter who initiates it, puppet or puppeteer, occupier or sovereign democracy.
