Super Typhoon Sepat...will it affect us directly?
Edited on Sat Aug-18-07 02:02 PM by uppityperson
Hurricane Dean is getting notice for being in the USA's backyard, I wanted to pass on that another typhoon/hurricane is happening and could also impact us. I also hope, way beyond wondering any personal effects, hope that those in and around and impacted by Sepat get through it ok.

Will electronics from Taiwan, and imports from Philippines rise after Sepat passes? So far only 3 have been reported killed, but this was a Super Typhoon that hit Taiwan after flooding Philippines.

More than 900,000 people in south and east China provinces have been relocated to safety as typhoon Sepat is expected to land in Fujian Province on Saturday or Sunday morning.

Sepat made a landfall in Hualien, the central-eastern part of Taiwan around 5:40 a.m. Saturday, with sustained winds of 180 kilometers per hour, according to the China Central Meteorological Center.

Power cut for thousands of households and downpours were reported in many parts of the island.

1. kick my own, while I know that local concerns us all the most & there is SO much bs going on
still I find only a couple current threads on this typhoon on DU. I wondered if putting a "how might it affect me" spin on a topic might get people noticing, or at least posting. Hoping for people to work together as world citizens, onward.

2. What is the difference between a typhoon and a hurricane?
Other than that they both cause a lot of destruction and are huge wind storms?

6. Wow! What an education!
Thanks. Not only do I now know the difference between a Hurricane, Cyclone and a Typhoon, but also a Willy-Willy and a Tornado! (It's all about regions and speed)

I feel like an expert now! Thanks! :Hi:

8. You are most welcome!
Living in Florida, I became quite the expert on highs and lows and their affects on hurricanes in much the same way. That site if really good and frankly, I learned something, too. I never even knew that Aussies called them Willy-Willys after some sort of dust devil thingie.

I love learning new things!

5. They are the same thing, just called differently in different places
Sepat is called Egay locally, Sepat is international code name.

7. Thanks - you should check out the link above, it's pretty interesting!
Still, they are all just as horrifying to the people experiencing them.

I went through a minor hurricane in Boston once of all places and I actually found it kind of exhilarating, but if I were facing a Cat 4 or 5 I certainly wouldn't stick around after seeing what can happen (Katrina, et al.). Hell, NYC can't even handle a simple Flash Thunderstorm, so I think even a Cat 3 hurricane would be a disaster in this city.

9. Once spent the night on Port Phillip Bay in a 90 knot gale.
Not fun. Not fun at all especially with a birthday dinner that consisted mostly of chocolate éclairs inside me. (Hey I was exactly 10 at the time).

10. Well, given your age and the fact that it was your birthday I can
understand that you would have been a bit shaken up and terrified! Poor thing!

And you were right on the bay! I actually think I might not be so brave if one came around again - at the time I didn't realize how destructive they could be, but now I have a little more respect for mother nature.
