Is this funny , or just sad? |
|
background: My sister was recently married and is moving to England soon , so I went to Indy to spend a few days with her.
She is a religious (not fundy, but close) Republican .I can't even talk to her about political things.
We were Just casually talking , and she told me her new husband is an atheist, so I took the opportunity to tell her that I also am an atheist.
She said " I can accept your atheism a lot better than I can accept your being a Democrat! "
Is that hilarious or not?

1. Curious here; what are her husband's political leanings? She can't |
|
diss you for being an atheist (because he's one), but can for how you vote? She's going to get an earful in England!

that he is a lot more liberal than her. It should be interesting , but she has known him for 25 years!

|
Hmmm. I know; politics is so unseemly to talk about! But not for her, apparently.
That said, I haven't talked to either brother except fleetingly for a few years now, but that has a lot to do with politics, at least with one of them. The other one is just anti-social.

If her belief is as strong as she claims , she would have reacted differently.
Suffice it to say I really love my sis , in spite of a lot of things

because it means she doesn't really care if you or her husband go to hell, either that, or she doesn't really believe in her religion but feels she has to put on a false front for her weird GOP peers
either way, that is definitely very sad

|
Long family history of union activism, support, DEMs way back and then there is my brother. And HE thinks we are weird.

26. It is not uncommon to rebel against what's familiar |
|
For some it's just a phase, but for others it lasts a lifetime. For me it was the latter - raised by republicans, but they weren't extreme right-wingers, just too conservative for my taste.

You are correct.
Unfortuntatly, her new husband may be a Rethug minus the "Christian" baggage.
Time will tell - but her new hubbie will either see the light and "convert" her -- or they will both join the Forces of Darkness from abroad.

in general their conservative parties are more liberal than most of our democrats. That would be like me moving to Mississippi, I can't even imagine that. I hope she move some where where all of her neighbors are gay couples.

who knows what that might be, but in some embarrassing moment you might pull out a "I'll do this even though I am a damned Democrat". Personally I think it is oddly funny. I probably would have told her to quit watching Fux and turn off Limpnuts. Maybe she will see some light.

and the perfect opportunity for you to open a conversation with her. Here, removed from the original discussion, it's easy to be glib, but my first thought was....
" I can accept your atheism a lot better than I can accept your being a Democrat! "
Good, I'm glad you are accepting of one, lets start from there. I am an atheist because of what I haven't seen. I haven't seen evidence to convince me to believe. I am also a Democrat, because of what I have seen, such as....
Build on what you are given, plant the seed, and maybe when she gets doubts about her own political leanings, she may recall your words, and come around. Who knows, she may not be as closed minded as some would suspect.
