"Porn" is the subject du jour. It is a subject of discussion among liberals on and off DU.

Tomorrow or the next day it will be back to Hillary Yes! No! and how come Edwards isn't "poor" enough.

edit: If you are really struggling, you can always take advantage of the hide thread feature. I've used in on several occasions to hide repulsive threads about celebrity deaths.

In fact I couldn't conceivably disagree more.

First, all the long threads on this topic have been in General Discussion, in which an eclectic variety of topics has always been allowed. Second, the very fact that those threads grew to such lengths is evidence that it is a topic that people have strong feelings about, and there is enough of a difference of opinion that discussion needs to be had. Not simply crude salaciousness of course, which was avoided for the most part, but meaningful discussion on the root issues that matter to all of us.

Don't worry though. Like all the other GD hubbubs that have occurred over the years, this one will die down soon. Frankly I think it has been a lot more useful than the endless threads on Anna Nicole Smith we once had, or any of the other pop culture topics that were the topic of the week on the news shows. Would you rather discuss the latest rich white blonde debutante to disappear on a tropical island? I know I wouldn't.

18. First, it's a political issue

exploitation of workers and capitalism and power structures is always political.

If it were racism issues, you'd see that. We're taught to be blind to sexism. We used to call racism "natural" - now, just the sexism is dismissed as such.

Second, you're seeing a lot of discussion for a number of reasons. One is that a fair number of feminists are pissed off in a righteous way about the continual disrespect shown to women on this site. So there is some backlash, where some have left the site altogether in protest, and others have decided to get in people's faces when we see it. Fight or flight, you got some of both going on.

It's also on our minds because the Iraq war is obviously a huge issue, which brings up issues of male supremacy, hypermasculinity and warfare, attacking the enemy by attacking their women, or their masculinity. There is no warfare without male supremacy in this country. (My Lai, Abu Ghraib, Skull-F***ing, Rambocrap and Robocrap, etc.)

And it's on our minds because we are pissed off to see the democrats starting to flounder on women's rights when the right wing is pushing so aggressively to remove them all together - our rights are being stripped away, and some of the leading dems are involved in that. So we are pissed off about that, too, like angry killer bees. We are sick and tired of this patriarchal bullshit, and looking to tear it down wherever it can be attacked, and we've had our eyes open a bit to the complicity of the liberal male - and female - in all of that.

There are other reasons, but you know, bigotry towards any group, exploitation of workers, discrimination, removal of basic human rights, those are all political.
