Dumping al-Maliki Could Stay Bush’s Course
By Craig Crawford | 11:45 AM; Aug. 23, 2007

Here we go again — new faces in Iraq to justify prolonging the U.S. presence. But this time, instead of rearranging the military uniforms on the ground, the Bush administration could be preparing the way for new political leadership in the Iraqi government.

The drumbeat to oust Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has only just begun. But if there is a change, look for the White House to argue that we must give the new leaders a chance before pulling out.

Even though President George W. Bush just yesterday expressed confidence in al-Maliki, there was something eerily similar to his words of support just before pulling the plug on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld or Mike Brown, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency during Hurricane Katrina.

Blaming al-Maliki and taking steps toward his replacement could help Bush get through next month’s war showdown on Capitol Hill. Rotating the roster in Iraq has long been a winning tactic for keeping the war on Bush’s course.

2. I can see that bull shit happening
Maliki is expendable to the bu$h regime, he has not produced the oil to the American Oil companies and it will be easy to blame the lack of progress in their conquest on him. Then claim that the new leaders will make a difference.

The question is, Will the American people and Congress buy it? I am not so much worried about the American people, they are fed up, but Congress might just fall in line once again and give lil bu$h what ever he wants.

7. But but but he was elected by a lot of people with purple fingers
through a democratic process (well indirectly anyway). He is apparently the prime minister the Iraqi people prefer and what bush has been sayin is that we want democracy to take root and flourish in Iraq. Surely we have no intention of removing a democratically chosen leader. That might give the citizens there a bad impression of democracy.

8. You have to remember this
bush has failed at every single thing he has done all his life. He has screwed up or bankrupted everything. He has to succeed at the war, other wise he will be the laughing stock of the world...no === make that the universe.

9. A US supported coup???
Now that is what I call a sure thing! Given the calls from so many politicians for maliki's removal and the convenient NIE saying he is a loser, who can doubt what is in the works. And look who the WaPo is foisting upon Iraq yet again as a leader/strongman....

<snip>

Iyad Allawi, however, a former Baathist turned CIA operative who has collaborated for three decades with US intrigues in the Middle East, is receiving undisguised backing in the US as the best candidate for Iraqi prime minister. The Washington Post published an opinion piece by Allawi on Saturday, in which he outlined a six-point “Plan for Iraq”.

His plan, not surprisingly, dovetails completely with US interests and demands. Its key elements include Maliki’s removal; the declaration of martial law across most of the country; an offensive against sectarian elements, i.e., Shiite militias, in the security forces; “telling Iran to end its interference in Iraq”; and an immediate end to de-Baathification in the name of “reconciliation”.
