A General addresses Congress to Report on the War
by nathguy

William Westmoreland

The Time the middle of 1967.

Progress is being made in the war, we have made new unexpected allies in the tribes,
the enemy is defeated in every battle and losing capability. The end is in sight.
The recently arrived troop increase has pushed us past the tipping point.

The final phase of this war is in sight, the forces we have recently
brought to the war are now paying dividends, our enemy is on the run, soon your sons
shall be brought back home to you

1. And the Navy hospital in Charleston was full.
Every one around us was going to war in some way at that time. Vietnam air planes and ships. I lived in it and we all were having trouble believing it. Many of us were talking about our boys going to Can. We were the service family

2. Westmoreland came back to the US around Christmas '67.
He went on all the talk shows, he spoke before a joint session of Congress. Standing ovations whereever he went. And, everywhere he went, Westmoreland announced that the enemy was defeated. He said they were incapable of launching a major offensive in the interior of South Vietnam.

February of '68 was Tet. There are still people who don't understand why Tet was such a major defeat for the US - not a military defeat - but a political rout.
