Be Patriotic! Work from Home.
Think about it, the more people who eliminate their daily commute to and from work:
- the less dependent we'd be on foreign oil,
- the cleaner our air would be,
- and the less tax-dollars we'd need to spend creating road systems big enough to handle rush-hour traffic.

Demand Grows for At-Home Employees
By TORY JOHNSON
Aug. 9, 2007

The home-based customer service industry is exploding, which means the need for people to answer inbound phone calls for big businesses from the privacy of their home offices, instead of overseas, or in traditional call centers, is greater than ever.

The three companies we have focused on — Alpine Access, Arise and LiveOps — tell us that they will hire 10,000 more agents combined, between now and December, to prepare for the holiday rush and new clients signing on.

3. Personally - I think some of the candidates whould mention this.
Some sort of government incentive to encourage employers to think about letting their employees work from home, at least part-time.

This is picking up, btw, because "out-sourcing" customer service to foreign countries didn't work out so well. Now, the way to save money on call-center seems to be to let people work from home - "home-sourcing".

5. Well, the problem I have with this...
is that it seems like everyone who brings up this subject seems to think everyone works a desk job for a corporation.

How is a cook supposed to work from home? Or a grocer? Or a salesclerk? I probably could work from home in my job, and I'd like to, but I'm in the minority.

7. Obviously, not EVERONE can work from home.
But, I am a contract computer programmer, and I usually have to drive hundreds of miles from home, or more, and get a hotel room, to do something at an office that I could easily do from home. And they expect me to be quiet and not talk to my co-workers and stay at my desk and ... it just seems so pointless to me.

Think about the savings if just 15-20% of office workers worked from home!

9. Certainly. And in your case it is appropriate
But as you said, not everyone can.

8. I was a Customer Service Rep in college. That work can now be done from home.
Yeah, there are a lot of rip-off companies taking advantage of people, but "home-sourcing" CSRs seems to be getting more prevalent.

Personally, I think that's a good thing.

12. Yep.. the 21st Century equivalent to "stuffing envelopes for THOUSANDS" every month
and I'm sure many setups do ask for a fee upfront for your "job"..

Sadly, too many companies LIKE having their employees under their thumbs, and in cublicles where they can be watched..

That said, my own son has worked at home..for a major company for about 4 years now...for a mid 6-figure income..and he LOVES it..
His wife is pissed at him, though ... she has to get up at 5AM and GO to work

2. I work from home. Best thing I ever did. HOWEVER ...
It does take a lot of discipline, and there is often a demand for certain computer setups and a quiet work environment.

The problem with some of the companies referenced is that they ask you do to phone work, which is fine, but only pay you for time actually spent talking with a customer. If you happen to experience a couple of hours without calls, you don't get paid for that time, even if you're sitting there waiting. Some people need a steady, guaranteed paycheck and can't afford to take that kind of gamble.

6. This one says they pay for all hours worked.
http://www.alpineaccess.com/external/careers/why_its_better_to_be_an_employee.html

Payment structure:

Alpine Access Employees: Paid hourly, guaranteed for hours you work

Job as Independent Contractor Elsewhere: Paid by call or per minute. Pay dependent on calls received. No guarantee of calls.

Having said that, I've never heard of this company before today, so I really don't know.

11. I've been working from home since 2001
as a legal transcriptionist but I certainly understand that not everyone can do this sort of thing. I had to put in 25 years as a legal secretary/paralegal going to an office every day before I was able to transition into this, and I'm only making about half as much money as I used to. Fortunately, other things have worked out in my life that have allowed me this luxury.

It sure is nice, though. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to spend half as much time on DU. I prefer DU over the money. :)

13. I already do & am looking for a good med. transcriptionist
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 01:13 PM by Autumn Colors
Not kidding. Finding GOOD MT's is really tough.

So nothing like using this thread to do what it suggests, if I can find the right person.

I need to find a medical transcriptionist already set up to work from home who has several years' experience transcribing gastroenterology (not typing for a multi-specialty place that includes some gastro, but specifically for a gastro practice). Part time to start, hopefully full time in a few months.

This is an independent contractor position, not an employee position. Pay is per 65-character line.

Send me a PM if you have the experience and have the tools at home that are needed (medical reference library, MicroSoft Word, medical spellchecker software installed). Wav player software can be downloaded for free online and you'd need a wav pedal for your computer. I think most are under $100.

I usually check in here every couple of days.

Again, sorry to post an ad here.
