Re: California's electoral votes |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 06:36 PM by panader0
The initiative in California would split electoral votes so that they would not all go to the winner of the popular vote. Hell, if the Dems had had this rule in Fla. in '00 or Ohio in '04, Gore or Kerry would be the boss. If Cal. does this, (and I doubt it will pass), shouldn't it be nationwide? I think the entire electoral vote thing should be tossed. How is giving the presidency to the one with less popular votes "democratic"? Edited to spell electoral cowreakly

3. It should be done nationwide as an alternative to abolishing the Electoral College |
|
This ensures a smaller mathematical probability of the electoral vote disagreeing with the popular vote. To ensure an even smaller margin of error, simply abolish the College and count the votes directly, but that would likely be vetoed by smaller states because they know the College already has a slight bias in favor of smaller states.

If folks think it's bad now, I can't even imagine how bad it'd get with that.
It's one thing to apportion the electoral votes according to the statewide proportions and quite another to map them to Congressional Districts. Texas redistricting on steroids.

8. While a wonderful idea, breaking up California's EC votes hurts Dems & helps the GOP |
|
If you did the same to a big Republican state like Texas or North Carolina, it'd help us and hurt the Republicans. Since the law would have to be passed by the majority party in each of these states, you can expect this proposal for unilateral disenfranchisement to go exactly nowhere.

9. It needs to be contingent on other states doing it too. |

If only California does it, California just screws itself out of its present electoral college clout, to the benefit of Republican candidates who now get nothing from us, and do nothing for us.
