Fearing the Nazis again
Source: LA Times

For more than half a century, Rachel Kane kept the memories at bay.

There were her daughters to think of, twins born in a displaced persons camp in the aftermath of the second World War. Kane didn't want to burden them with tales of the Holocaust, of a husband shot to death by the Nazis, a baby who starved to death in the forest, an extended family wiped out in a mass execution.

She didn't explain the nightmares that woke her, screaming, in the long string of cramped apartments the family called home after resettling in Detroit and then Los Angeles.

Instead, the university-educated Hebrew teacher who spoke seven languages regaled her daughters with stories about her "beautiful life" before Hitler's armies stormed Poland, successfully locking the war years away until 1998. That was when her second husband died. When she began to lose her battle with dementia. When she became convinced that the soldiers were coming for her, as they'd done so many years before.

2. This is what sent chills down my spine:

1933 Jan. 30 Nazi "seizure of power": Hitler becomes Chancellor with a cabinet numerically dominated by conservatives.

4. and this
1933 March 23 Enabling Act: This bill, which receives the necessary two-thirds majority with the aid of the Center Party, grants full legislative powers to the cabinet without requiring the assent of the Reichstag. It is the formal basis of Hitler’s power for the remainder of the Third Reich.

Sounds a bit familiar.

We fill their e-mail, tie up their phones, march in the streets and into their offices, 19 of their own co-sign, and yet they don't see.

5. And sadly, Holocaust denial and minimalization...
...just seems to be gaining more "converts."

8. Holocaust deniers are sick little sh*theads.....
Edited on Fri Aug-24-07 06:23 PM by Sarah Ibarruri
and Holocaust minimalization is equally sick.

I think the Holocaust and all planned mass genocides and ethnic exterminations should be obligatory coursework in schools. I'm completely pro-peace, but it pisses me off when people equate war with genocide and ethnic extermination. It's a different category.

10. Good Lord
I cried while reading this. The horrors survived now being relived.

Holocaust deniers and Republicans need to be made to care for these people to see the reality, and the consequences of political extremism.
