Gonzales is the skunk at the picnic
By MARIANNE MEANS
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/328842_means24.htmlWASHINGTON -- As he was fleeing the White House for the rest of the city's hot and humid summer, President Bush was asked whether Attorney General Alfredo Gonzales might leave the administration soon, following the example of that other political lightning rod, Boy Genius Karl Rove.
The president smirked and indicated absolutely not because Gonzales "has done nothing wrong." Hmm. It is hard to see how the president defines "nothing wrong." Bush obviously approves of Gonzales' clumsy but slavish devotion to White House orders for a full cover-up of shenanigans designed to perpetuate and protect partisan Republican interests.
By that definition, contempt of Congress is not wrong. Obstruction of justice is not wrong. Perjury is not wrong. Trying to take political advantage of a sick man in a hospital bed is not wrong. Firing a pack of U.S. attorneys without apparent professional reasons -- but a lot of political reasons -- is not wrong.
Secret eavesdropping on private American conversations without a court warrant is not wrong. Destroying the credibility and integrity of our nation's judicial system is not wrong. Nothing is wrong, if the president commands it. This is not the definition of a democracy. It's closer to the definition of dictatorship.
That we have come to this is awful. ................
