Hey, Nancy...Can We Talk?
Nancy...first, I have to say, I still haven’t congratulated you on your enormous win last November…and…oh my gosh, I am so embarrassed, it’s already been 9½ months!!! My goodness, the time just slipped by. (I’m kinda’ hoping the same rule applies here as with weddings and babies and that sort of thing...you know, that 12-month grace period thingy...to send a gift, or whatever! HA!HA!) Seriously, Nancy, you know me…I stay so busy…I haven’t even had time to watch the news lately. Course, I haven’t felt a need to with you and Harry in charge now!

Anyway…Congratulations, my dear. I couldn’t be more ecstatic! It must be such an incredible honor to be the first Madam Speaker. You are just so blessed! And of course you deserve it too. I cheered for you and your success the whole way. Yes I did!

But it wasn’t easy, was it Nancy? Remember, just a few months back, when Dennis was in charge, and things were sooo different then? Remember?

Like that time when John wanted to hold a hearing on The Downing Street Memo, and Dennis gave him such a hard time about that…He wouldn’t even give him a room to hold his hearing in…Remember that? Poor John had to hold his hearing in the capital basement!…And John had that letter with ALL those signatures from Americans demanding answers? Course we couldn’t get those answers then cause we weren’t in charge (DUH!)…But we are now, aren’t we? I bet you have been going after that with both guns blazing! I mean the DSM is so HUGE!…And since 9 months has gone by and all…You must be so on top of that by now!

Oh, yeah, and then there was that time when we all found out about the Vice President and his side-kick Bush spying on everyone? Oh. My. God. That was so WRONG. You were so pissed. I still remember the expression on your face! Man! What have you done to stop that lately? I bet you have SO shut that program down! You go girl!

And then there was the whole TORTURE thing. Remember how ashamed we were? (Shudder) I can’t even go there. I’m just glad you and Harry are in charge. Man, I bet you all have passed some amazing legislation to stop that sort of thing. I wish I had time to listen to the news more so that I could cheer all these victories with you.

But while I’m at it…I have to ask…How’s Harry doing? I bet he just loves being the leader of the Senate. He was so frustrated during those years that Bill Frist was in charge. Remember the nuclear option? HA! HA! HA! Bet Harry’s been having field day with that one. Mitch Mac must be SO hating life! But seriously, how many times has Harry threatened to use that against them?

Oh the things you two can accomplish together now that you are in charge. All those things we dreamed of…Remember how we just wanted to see our country whole again? See it being respected here and abroad like it used to be. Remember? Like ending the war and bringing the troops home and restoring habeas corpus, and outlawing torture and eavesdropping and Gitmo…oh, I could just go on and on.

Man! You could even pull the ultimate dream of rallying the Congress into impeachment proceedings! Seems like that’s all I ever hear about these days when I do come up for air! There sure is a lot of support for it! (BTW, I heard a nutty rumor that you took that off the table – FOX NEWS started spreading that rumor, didn’t they? I bet they did.) But, seriously, Nancy…I know you and Harry have it all under control. Next time I do take the time to tune into the news, I’m sure it will be so different from how it was just 9 months ago.

And with all the excellent changes you and Harry are making, we have nothing to worry about in 2008! But we’ll discuss that another time. I should let you go now…Duty calls.

Love you both. Stay in touch. And whatever you do, don’t ever forget who put you where you are today. But then, I know you won’t!

... if I were running things, I'd appoint you to the position of Permanent US Diplomat to the World!

Your consideration of other people's feelings is an inspiration to all of us here.

No, I am not offended in the least - this is an EXCELLENT piece of writing, and I'm hoping we'll all be seeing a lot more of it on DU in future - (hint hint to the OP).

50. Yeah, I didn't think you were the type to want to be the one and only
And there isn't anyone who could push you aside anyway. You're one of the best political satire writers I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This one was mighty pleasant as well. I have the ire and and the snarkiness but you two (and there are a number of others here as well) put good writing to the task of snarky fury. I envy that (though not enough to learn how to write that well and heck, I think talent does play into it as well and my talents lie elsewhere, somewhere beyond my parenthetical comments).

15. Good night NanceGrace and California Peggy
I'm off to bed now too.

Tonight, I am going to bed with a great big grin on my face. It's always nice to write something that lands on the greatest page. But to have someone compare my work to NanceGrace's (thank you, CP) is an unbelievable honor.

To have such wonderful support from my favorite writer on DU (that'd be you, NG!) is truly beyond words.

Thank you both and sweet dreams.

16. It's about time somebody gave credit where credit was due!
Damn fine essay Whereismyparty, some truth to truth there that we can all learn from.

:sarcasm:
But you left out that first hundred hours that shook the world. Well, I felt like John Reid just
watching the revolution begin with all that language about free lunches and so forth. We all
remember what came out of that. No need to address those pesky Constitutional issues. What does
the extreme left of this party want anyway. I'll be damned if I ever support those people who
get their marching orders from Bruce Fein and Paul Craig Roberts. Ha beaus corpus, "renditions" in
torture, listening in on every form of communication...that's just inside the beltway stuff. You
gave us four days to remember, four days that shook the world!

And lets not forget, those Jennings hearings and investigating all the other election fraud. That
will stop the vote villains in their tracks. They are toast. No more stolen elections because of
the legislation.

Where's the love?

Do we have to call a gratitude meeting?

26. I won't hold my breast waiting for Nancy and gang to do anything worth while for we the people...
nor for her and gang to restore the balance of power and save the constitution. They don't get paid to do those sorts of things anyway. It's the corporations that pay them so I guess that will determine what they will do. Of course we all need corporations so we can get jobs over in India and China. I plan to move there soon so I can get a good job. I am just happy that there are good jobs yet. I don't want to have to pick cotton and cucumbers like all the illegal aliens do. Much thanks to Nancy and gang!

Peace love and all that shit. God bless ya honey.

You were one of the first people I posted a response to when I joined DU a couple of months ago, praising something you'd written, and you were nice enough to have a kind word for me. Ditto for Nance Greggs. I wish I had a fraction of the talent both of you have for expressing what so many of us feel. I wish both of you had wider audiences than those of us here on DU. All of America desperately needs to see and hear your words. I guess this seems like ass-kissing , but I really mean it. Thank you for being so articulate in the service of trying to wake up America , and especially our perhaps last hope: our party "leaders" who go along like nothing all that critical is at stake.

Left off one salient point - she did accomplish getting all of us progressives, and all of us not so progressive but hey we still love the Constitution anyway types - both of these two groups are now allowed to be labelled as ding dong wing nuts.

And while we are congratulating her, could we also ask her JUST WHAT DO WE GET IN RETURN FOR ALL THIS POLITENESS??

32. Nancy is doing a well as possible
They've had 600 hearings. Not enough hearings? They've passed legislation but if Bush doesn't like it he vetoes it. Nancy is not able to remake the world to fit your views in just eight months.

Nancy ran as a Democrat, not a Green Party agitator. She said up front there wouldn't be impeachment. She never promised to get rid of torture in the first 8 months. Did she say she could get rid of wiretapping? I didn't hear it.

Only a handful of the votes Democrats received were from the current Nancy Pelosi haters. She doesn't owe her obedience to one small vocal unreasonable group.

35. I'm going to tell you a secret to which very few people are privy:
You know those groups they form in Congress -- the ones they call committees? You know what they're supposed to do? They're supposed to hold hearings. That's what Congress does.

And as for all of those vetoes (I think we're up to three), they have nothing to do with the horrible legislation which Pelosi actively arranges to bring to the floor of the House. That stuff gets signed.

Oh, and that "one small vocal unreasonable group" you speak of? We're the vast majority.

37. Looks like its probably a small minority to me
Here's the latest pollingreport.com on Pelosi:

Favorable Unfavorable Can'tRate Haven'tHeardofUnsure
7/19-22/07 31 35 12 4

Republicans don't like Pelosi so there is most of the 35%. Add some independents and a few Democrats. 31% like Pelosi, close to the number of Democrats. Out in San Francisco, which is as far left as you can get, Sheehan only polls 9% against Pelosi.

The OP said Congress wasn't holding enough hearings. I said they held 600. I'm well aware that there is a committee system and I don't see your point, other than to make some unoriginal smart remarks. Committees are supposed to hold hearings, and they are holding hearings.

Pelosi got stuck with a couple of bad bills. She doesn't actively arrange bad bills. She fought on Iraq and had an alternative to the FISA bill that lost.

This was a well deserved and well executed snark.
