California family loses second son in Iraq

CLOVIS, California: A California family has lost its second son in Iraq — one of 14 U.S. soldiers killed in a Black Hawk helicopter crash on Wednesday, friends said.

A third son is to return from Iraq, a police spokesman said on behalf of the family.

The family of Spc. Nathan Hubbard, 21, was taking his death "very, very hard," said police spokeswoman Janet Stoll-Lee. The soldier's father, Jeff Hubbard, is a retired 30-year veteran of the police department.

Nathan's older brother, Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Hubbard, died in a roadside bomb explosion in downtown Ramadi in 2004. A third brother, Jason, will be returning home from Iraq to be with his family, Stoll-Lee said on behalf of the Hubbards.

Army Specialist Nathan Hubbard -- a 2004 Buchanan High School graduate who joined the military after his brother was killed in Iraq three years ago -- died Aug. 22 during a Blackhawk helicopter crash about 180 miles north of Baghdad.
Military officials said the cause of the crash appeared to be mechanical and not hostile fire.

The Hubbard family requested no media interviews for several days. "They're taking this very, very hard," said Janet Stoll-Lee, spokeswoman for the Clovis Police Department, in a written statement. Hubbard's father, Jeff Hubbard, is a retired Clovis police sergeant and the family has asked the police department to offer updates this week.

This is the Clovis family's second son who has died in the Iraq war. Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Hubbard, a 2001 Buchanan graduate, died in November 2004 during enemy action in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. Jared Hubbard's best friend, Jeremiah Baro, also a former Buchanan student, was serving beside his friend that day and died, too.

Brothers Nathan and Jason Hubbard joined the Army shortly after in 2005, in part to honor their fallen brother. Jason Hubbard is returning home this week following the death of his second brother.
