It's about we'll be able to move past this cycle of stupidity, or if we're doomed to repeat it.

is respect.
Do you have to agree, no. But the circle represents peace. United but unwilling to kill each other for our differences. It's a powerful message. You have your free will and I respect that...as I have mine. Unity is what will save this planet. The fact that we are all one race, the human race. Not the reptites.
Gnosticism my friend.

3. Unity in the sense of that post makes no sense. However |
|
as far as we're concerned, we either hang together or we hang seperately.

Unity with the rethuglicans is an impossibility...and anyone that talks like that is an appeaser...
When we take control, it's payback time, nothing more, nothing less....
Democrats still play by the rules, rethuglicans make up their own rules as they go along, hold their opponents to the rules and do whatever the hell they want...
NO MORE!
You don't take a knife to a gunfight...It's time the Dems learned that...

5. I posted on this recently |

Unity is overrated anyway Seriously.
If you are going to do big things that make a significant impact on people's lives--in a good way or a bad way--you are going to divide people. Some people will get angry and fight you every step of the way.
We want national health care, an end to the Iraq War and gay marriage. Those are divisive policy commitments, and doing these things will make some people very angry, but that does not change the fact that they are the right things to do. Lincoln and FDR were very divisive presidents, and they changed the country in a very positive way.
I don't care if a president is divisive or not. What I care about is whether or not he is doing what is right for the country. That is where Bush should be criticized. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=3459503#3459514

That's all I hear when I hear people call for "unity" because it's always on their terms that "unity" must be had. I prefer to keep an open mind, hence, "unity" whether just another word for fascism or not, is anathematic to me and ever will be.

9. I feel the same way. "Unity" as it is often used sounds oppressive. That said, there is one |
|
caveat: Sometimes numbers are called upon to effect a desired outcome, and a coalition must hold together to achieve it. And I feel okay about that if you go into it with that commitment - then I think calls for unity are okay.

10. That's true, but large enough numbers to effect an outcome is a majority |
|
Calls for a majority or large enough numbers to reach a tipping point are fine by me too. That leaves room for dissent, which I think is healthy and neessary.
The main problem about a call for "unity" is that it gives fearful authoritarian personalities an excuse to persecute, attack and scapegoat in the name of "unity". It's a disgusting aspect of humanity. That some people, perhaps most people, want or seem to need everyone else to be of one mind, a carbon copy of their own, or, if I may use Jungian terms, a projection their own shadow.
How many people have been killed or persecuted because they did not ascribe to the same thoughts of unity as their governmental or revolutionary leaders? Calls for unity are nasty stuff. Makes my spine tingle when I hear them.
